High Speed Train Coming?-split from boosting Canada’s military spending"

CN and CP are like Bell, Rogers and Telus. They know they have zero ability to compete without protection. That's why they don't try.
The orifice through which you express yourself is not the one on the front of your face.

Telecom is another example of a turf that most countries jealously guard against foreigners. TELUS is abroad, and the approximate position of the company to increased foreign investment and competition in Canada was always "bring it on".

Naturally. Telus is like CN and foreign competition is like VIA.

Telus owns the towers, anyone coming in to "compete" has to pay Telus for their use.

It's the other way around. TELUS (along with the other ILECs) has to provide access to parts of its infrastructure to competitors, at governed rates. The big companies at least among themselves would probably come to agreement even without government intervention. Competitors are pretty much free to build out stuff where they want to, if they want to.

Governments usually settle for structuring things so that small companies can compete in the most lucrative and low-cost markets (ie. the low fruit), and then subsidize companies to provide services where there is no viable market. See also: election and re-election.

Ultimately, telecom is one of the things that is a natural monopoly (which is almost always the case with utilities). That is the root of all the absurd notions people have and repeat.
