High Speed Train Coming?-split from boosting Canada’s military spending"

I've taken the train (corridor) more times than I have flown, and have more, worse disruptions when flying than taking the train. Even the handful of times I have taken the Ocean have been relatively uneventful (the meandering slow roll of that train is part of the charm for me).
I was about to say the same thing. I've never had any issues with train service to Toronto or Montreal.

I used to take the Ocean 20+ years ago to travel to Ontario for school, even scored a date once! We were stranded outside Rimouski due to a gigantic blizzard. The nice lady and I got chatting  while stranded!

Flying is a gigantic PITA and it's often less convenient than driving for any drive under 12 hours.

Would love to take the kid on the train...but VIA is so unreliable you have no idea what time it will show up at the station...or arrive. Hopefully the date is correct. Because every VIA train takes second seat to freight it's constantly delayed.

It's now the worst of all worlds - unreliable, chaotic and very expensive. When you look forward to Air Canada shudder flights it's not a good scene.

Don't vouch for this site . But, it tracks VIA Rail On Time Performance.

Thanks for that. Looks like 44% on schedule ranging from 40 min to 4.5 hours delayed to the nearest station.

Performance in western Canada is not the same as the East

their biggest driver seems to be a strong aversion to relying on CN or CP,
A number of reasons. For several decades, both Class 1s have shown absolutely no interest in passenger rail, let alone HSR. Neither railroad has a corridor that can support HSR except perhaps in spots. Depending on final alignments, they may have to share in terminal approaches, but they will be low speed anyway. Both railways have shown no interest in electrification on their properties. ALTO doesn't want to be a tenant, subject to the landlord's rules, because VIA's past experience hasn't been great.

I think the need for a tunnel into downtown largely means there's no point not building a suburban stop for a decent catchment. It's sensible. The real question is why they don't have one in the GTA. Forcing a million people to backtrack in GTA East is dumb.
I admittedly don't follow it breathlessly by a lot I have read suggests they are considering a 'GTA east' stop - somewhere.
