History of Slavery in "Canada" (split from JT Popularity thread)

That’s actually a good point. We could use the relationship with the crown as a benchmark. Something I’ve overlooked.
It actually occurred before confederation in the east. British Columbia was a self-governing colony at the time before Confederation was a thing.

All the more puzzling for Canada’s apology.

1877 Treaty 7 between The Crown and the Blackfoot.

1871 Treaty between Blackfoot and the Cree after the Battle of the Belly River in Lethbridge between the Cree and Assiniboine after they raided the Blackfoot and were defeated.

Let there be one standard?

With the backing of France and The Church the United Kingdom, the protestant champion and the base of the Freemasons, was invaded.

The Acadian Expulsion can be seen as part of that Anglo-French enmity and not simply as a peculiar act visited on peace-loving Canadians.

On the gradual removal of slavery from the British empire and the roles of Granville Sharp, John Newton, William Wilberforce, Henry Dundas and John Graves Simcoe. The removal of the state of slavery applied equally to blacks under English and Scottish law and to white coalminers in Scotland.

The general principle was the same. When slavery was found to be illegal the first steps were to declare the children of slaves free and to prevent the importation of new slaves. Existing slaves were bound to their "employer" under their terms of engagement for the duration of their "contract". When they were released by their employer or died then the employer had to contract with free people for their labour.

Lower Canada had about 1000 slaves when Simcoe arrived in 1792 and Upper Canada had 15 black slaves in York. Those slaves continued in servitude until they were released by their masters/employers or they died.

Britain eventually ended the slave trade in the British empire by buying out the "contracts" of every slaveholder. That cost is 20 MUKP or 5% of its GDP in 1833. The payment was undertaken by Whig politician Earl Grey, him of the tea and grandfather of him of the cup. One of the people benefitting was William Gladstone who voted against the bill until being assured that his father would be compensated for the loss of his slaves.

The UK launched the West Africa Squadron in 1808. It aimed to disrupt the trade between West Africa and Latin America earning the enmity of the importers, the African slavers and the Arab traders that all benefited from the trade. Britain continued fighting slavery until the last country renounced slavery in 1981 - Mauritania.
