Hockey

I was leaning towards the "Merrickville Monkmen" :warstory:

....too many bad punch-lines if we called ourselves the "Bobbitts" ;D

I just finished reviewing this whole thread and yes I would like to see the NHL playing again. A few posters have referred to this situation as a strike. WRONG it is a LOCK OUT. The owners created this mess and now their solution is it's my way or no way. This last weeks players offer & the owners response just may be the nail in the coffin for this years season.   Afraid we're in for a long wait.

Lets Hope for Better

I'm not really a big hockey fan, so I havent been following the lock-out that closely, but I think that what's going on here is prevalent in all sports right now. I know that professional athletes are amazingly gifted, and provide us with hours of entertainment (and misery ;D), but do you think that any one of them deserves more than 1 million dollars each season? Isn't that more than enough money to live a comfortable life, get an education, raise a family and do what nearly every kid dreams of doing for a living? Is anyone else tired of seeing pro athletes driving around in new exotic cars, when the people that go to the games and pay their salaries are living below the poverty line?
Sometimes I wonder if every player on a professional sports team should get paid exactly the same amount. Or if you should get payed more the longer you play, just like many real professions. Picture a football team, 45 guys who all get the same salary, from the punter to the star Quarterback. They all play a role in the team's success, so why not pay them all the same? Those who are better get a better chance of playing longer, and those who arent as skilled naturally drop out of the rosters.
Maybe this is why my girlfriend calls me a communist, but I think that these guys dont deserve the money that they get.

Everyone's mad at bettman, be mad at the players.
They're the ones being unreasonable.

and I don't know if this has been mentioned - but why is the NHL content in adapting a system like baseball has adapted? That system only promotes grossly paid athletes.

Me personally, I think that a NFL model should be adopted to the NHL. Similiar amount of following, same number of teams, similiar types of revenue and get this - it works very well for all teams. Is a salarycap so bad an idea? If they can't survive on x millions per season, they have some definate issues. I know alot of families who a few thousand dollars would make a heck of alot of a difference.

And cut the number of games, there is no logical reason that the Cup should be awarded in June and begin again in Sept.

Finally, maybe this will promote amateur and semi pro.
I'd love to see univ and WHL/Junior games on the tele.

I sure don,t know where you are getting your info from.
The salary cap the NHL is trying to impose is less than most NFL teams pay their top 3 or 4 players.
Similar revenue & following not even close. The NFL far exceeds the NHL in both in all but the Canadian markets. The problem is the NHL has expanded to markets that can not or will not support their teams. Lets face it in Carolina if all the fans are in the stands, there is no one at home to watch on TV. This and other markets do not have good TV revenue available to them.
Why expand to these markets, SIMPLE the league (owners) receive 100 million for a new franchise. To ensure they can further expand they want to make these bad businesses successfull so they can further   expand. The big market teams like Detroit, New York   & Colorado have pushed the salaries to the point that most small   market teams have a hard time or can not compete. The owners stand is a way for them to protect themselves from some of themselves.   Does anyone honestly think that if a profit making team(see above list + Toronto) gets a large savings from a new contract that they will drop ticket prices. I sure don't.

Ps: Cut the # of games. I agree but give your head a shake.  More games = more seat sales & more  TV revenue for the owners.

You're right.
My thoughts, I think, are still playing catchup in the whole thing because I don't follow the NHL like I used to.
But the NFL model is a good model. and maybe the NHL proper needs to evaluate both its policies,in terms of players and franchise owners.
