OTTAWA - Four members of a convoy hit by a suicide bomber near Kandahar in October 2006 are being honoured with bravery decorations, Gov. Gen. Michaelle Jean announced Tuesday.
A man with charges strapped to his body rode a bicycle into a Canadian jeep and detonated himself on Oct. 3 that year, a few hours after two Canadian soldiers were killed and several others wounded in a Taliban ambush several kilometres away.
Loaded with ammunition, the vehicle known as a G-wagon burst into flames.
Cpl. Piotr Krzysztof Burcew of Repentigny, Que.; Lieut. Jason Demaine of Ottawa, and Cpl. Adrian Markowski and Cpl. Stephen Thomas, both of Mississauga, Ont., "saved the lives of their fellow soldiers and local Afghan civilians" by unloading ammunition from the burning vehicle.
"Despite having to cross through flames, they repeatedly returned to the vehicle to retrieve mission-essential cargo and high-explosive ammunition that posed a deadly threat to those nearby," said the statement from Rideau Hall.
"They moved away from the scene just moments before the fire raged out of control, detonating the remaining rounds."
The four will be awarded Decorations for Bravery for their actions. They are among 26 who will receive the award at a future ceremony.
The others:
-Petty Officer (first class) Alain Baillargeon of Gatineau, Que.; Martin Baillargeon of Sherbrooke, Que., and Marco Bedard of Matagami, Que., twice rescued a traveling companion from drowning on Dec. 27, 2006, after their snowmobiles broke through ice. Baillargeon has since died.
-Stanley Anglin of Toronto and Sgt. Lawrence Zimmerman of Burlington, Ont., attempted to save a woman and her 18-month-old baby from a burning apartment, in Toronto on April 14, 2005. Heavy smoke forced them to abandon their efforts. Firefighters managed to rescue the baby but the mother later died.
-Edith Chamberland, 15, of St-Valentin, Que., pulled a 10-year-old boy from the path of an out-of-control vehicle in St-Paul-de-l'Ile-aux-Noix, Que., on Nov. 15, 2006.
-Ontario Provincial Police Const. Dennis Armand Desjardins and OPP Const. Stephen Waite, both of Sioux Lookout, Ont.; OPP Sgt. Adam Illman of Kenora, Ont., and retired OPP constable Gary Read of Thunder Bay, Ont., rescued a man trapped in his burning car near Sioux Lookout on Aug. 19, 2006.
-David Hamilton of Morden, N.S., swam 200 metres through darkness, heavy fog and strong surf to rescue a woman whom rising tide had stranded on a rock off the Morden shore, near French Crossing, N.S., on Aug. 22, 2005.
-John Haney of Wolfe Island, Ont., leaped into the frigid waters of Lake Ontario on Oct. 27, 2006, to rescue a suicidal woman who had jumped from a ferry.
-Off-duty firefighter Richard Lemieux of Montreal risked his life on April 30, 2005, to rescue a 16-year-old boy from a fiery death in Montreal. Intense flames initially forced Lemieux out of the teen's apartment. He then ran next door, sat on a window ledge, leaned outside and coaxed the boy to leap to him. He grabbed the victim by his clothing and pulled him into the room.
-Capt. Dennis Mann of Victoria, B.C., leaped into waters off Vancouver Island on Oct. 16, 2006, to rescue a man whose life vest was caught in their boat's propeller. He performed artificial respiration underwater before freeing the victim from his life vest and returning him to the surface.
-Deputy Chief John Mellon and Const. Shawn Charles Piercey, both of the Pembroke, Ont., city police, dove into deep, cold water to rescue a suicidal man from drowning in the Muskrat River on Nov. 11, 2006.
-Richard Plaisted of St. Pascal-Baylon, Ont., rescued a 17-year-old boy from his burning vehicle after a crash on a deserted country road near Embrun, Ont., on Aug. 13, 2006.
-Kevan Shaw of Nanaimo, B.C., helped RCMP officers subdue an armed and violent man on Nov. 2, 2006.
-Const. James Sophocleous of George's River, N.S., rescued a family of six from a house fire in North Sydney, N.S., on July 6, 2005.
-Tina Trombley of Regina draped herself over a man to shield him from a group who was beating him outside a nightclub on July 17, 2005. A car driven by a fleeing assailant ran over the two, dragging them "a considerable distance" until their bodies became dislodged from beneath the vehicle. Trombley was seriously injured.
-Ralph Walker of Ingersoll, Ont., dragged an unconscious man from his smoke-filled apartment on Nov. 4, 2006.
-David Wheesk of Winnipeg fought dizzy spells as he groped his way through toxic smoke and flames to save a mother and her two children from a house fire in Fort Albany, Ont., on Nov. 30, 2004.
