Houthi Red Sea Blockade

Funny you would say that. A few years ago there was discussion on here about guns and that they were past their time. I guess we should be building fast cruisers and or battle ships with lots of air defense assets including a but load of guns.

You really don't need a gun ......until you REALLY need a gun.
Missile and rockets are the current Shiney objects that get all the attention. But they come with a couple of limitations. Both financially and in the amount of space both above and below deck they take up.
The British were on the way to removing their deck guns they competed for space with other systems and it was felt that in the future there'd be no need for such old fashioned foolishness.
And then the Falklands war happened and they began relearning all sorts of painful truths and not just the ones involving shipboard artillery.

I think the manufacturing and logistics behind it would agree with you as well. Its much easier and cheaper to produce shells and charges than it is to produce missiles.

US fighter jet rolls off aircraft carrier, sinks into ocean, Navy says

An F/A-18E fighter jet rolled off the side an aircraft carrier and sank to the bottom of the Red Sea, the Navy announced on Monday.

There was one enlisted crew member aboard the jet and a second enlisted crew member inside the tractor when the incident occurred.

Both personnel were able to jump out in time with only one person sustaining a minor injury, according to officials.

The Red Sea seems to have developed a taste for American aircraft.

Some info suggests a failed arrester wire and the aircraft bolted at significantly less airspeed than full power could save.

Both incidents apparently occurred with the Truman taking incoming from the Houthi.

Several reports suggest the first Hornet went into the drink while the carrier was executing sharp turns (not sure exactly how much a CVN lists while doing that).

I have worked with USS Ronald Reagan in the past, when she was doing trials after a refit.

When that class of CVN cranks on a turn at 40 kts, the lean is…impressive.

I cannot even begin to imagine the inertia of that large a mass turning that sharply at that speed either.

18.4MN (Meganewtons) of centripetal force during a full-rudder turn. (f=mv2/r, m=100000tons/90Mkg, v=30kts/15m/s, r=~1100m)

At that speed, a CVN has also had 10.1GJ of kinetic energy, or about 3.5 seconds of full output from Ontario’s Pickering nuclear plant…

How many flux capacitors could it power?

I had assumed that the Houthi's were using traditional AD missiles to kill the Reapers, but this seems a very "interesting" solution the Iranians have come up with. Like the Bayraktar TB2, the Reapers abilty to fly unmolested appears to be coming to an end.

Or maybe it's just a bad month for F/A-18's?

Fortunately we've cleverly disguised ours as CF-188's so we should be safe!
