Hello,

I served back in 1987 - 1990,  I am being told I need my service number for something I am doing, however I dont know it, or what I remember was back then we used our SIN as out Service number.  though I could be wrong.

where to I go to get it? whom do I talk too?

please and thanks.

Stephen

Service Numbers were not issued until sometime in the 90's.  You may not have one issued to you.

Thank you, mariomike, but I don't think that is relevant to OP's issue.

Yes, service numbers were introduced in the early 1990's. Big deal. The issue is wether this poster has one, needs one or can be issued with one.

My understanding when the new SN's were issued in replacement of our SIN's as service reference (and I was still in then) was that personnel already released from the service would NOT be issued retroactively with the new Service Number.

This is the poster's situation. Therefore, his service number remains his SIN for all reference purposes and that is what he should use in any document that requests such number.

My understanding, also, was that if, and only if, a request for your military file was made by a retired member who was under the old system, such request was to be made using your SIN and then - and only then - in reply, would an actual SN be generated and provided to the member for future reference. I am not absolutely clear on this last part and perhaps, someone from records can chime in.

For what it is worth to the discussion, this is how I got my Service Number,

My experience was with the National Military Cemetery.
You give them your Social Insurance Number ( SIN ).
( Regimental # if you were in that far back. )
Whatever number they put on your Release certificate.
They then issue you a CAF Service Number.
Simple as that.

That information may, or may not, be helpful to whatever it is the OP is doing.

So my situation is still un resolved at this point. But my situation has been updated.

I am trying to apply for a Job using GCJobs, and to qualify you need to provide your service number and my SIN isnt accepted in their system.
After reaching out to them, I was informed the following:
"We have forwarded your request to the Director of Casualty Support Management (DCSM) [email protected] for their approval"
So this might solve the short term problem, but I am aiming to see if I can get a new number issued too me.

In my travels, I have also requested my Personal file, so there is a chance according to "Oldgateboatdriver" I might be issued a new service number, and I will report back on that.  but I will mention that my request went through the national Archives, so I am not sure if that will trigger it.

I contacted Veterans affairs, and in short they told me there is nothing they can do. Dont dont have me listed as a veteran, but mentioned they don need too. only if I apply for something they will need my services files. but I have an account and I am on file.

I reached out to my Niece who works in HR somewhere for DnD and asked her for insight.

I suspect at some-point I may get issues a Service number but I am not that far along yet.

its proving to be interesting!
