How to motivate the Iraqi Police

Winning hearts and minds, one police station at a time…

Well, he seems to be the guy who tells it like he sees it. I wonder if it had any effect.....

While this might work for a western soldier, venting frustration and swearing is not exactly a good motivational tool for the Iraqis...

As in A'stan, I can't imagine the police/army being motivated by a Gunnery Sergeant Hartman wannabe calling them cowards, while wearing full body armour and helmet, transported by an armoured vehicle or helicopter....when their ballistic wear is a ball hat and a chest rig, and their transport is piling, fully exposed, into the back of a Nissan pick-up truck.

If Rambo wants to talk the talk, then maybe he should walk the walk first.

Beating Bleating off like that could be a pretty quick way to an accidental discharge into the back of the brain case housing assembly some dark and stormy night.

Not saying that his speech was right, but there's a better than average chance he has some experiences with those guys, no?

It is funny to watch people vent sometimes though.

The speech would have been a lot more effective if the translation from English to Arabic was done properly. The person doing the translating missed a lot of key points or didn't translate them properly.

At the end the IP guy tells the American that Americans keep calling them terrorists and that they don't trust them because they feel that the Americans think that they are terrorists. He says that they keep being accused of being Iranians and/or terrorists so I guess the trust issue goes both ways. The Americans don't trust the Iraqi's and the Iraqi's don't trust the Americans.

The Iraqi said something about them not wanting to patrol in the streets because the Americans are flying overhead and driving around and would just stop them and accuse them of being terrorists so that scares them. It's just another excuse but I can see how it has merit.

and then returning to the highly protected FOB.  :(

I am thinking more in terms of "praise in public, punish in private".  This principle is true in most cultures worldwide...
