The Army is looking to upgrade the weapon mounted on the JLTV from the 50 cal to a 30mm gun as carried by the Apache.

As the U.S. Army readies to bring its current crop of Humvees into the 21st century with a new vehicle, reconnaissance officials are also looking to replace the Humvee's pre-World War II .50-caliber machine gun with a version of the Apache helicopter’s cannon in 2019.

The Army has embarked on a major project to replace the Humvee, officially known as the High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWVS). Last year the Army signed a $6.7 billion deal with Oshkosh Defense for 17,000 Joint Light Tactical Vehicles (JLTVs). Touted as offering more protection and greater off-road mobility, JLTVs will replace a large chunk of the Army and Marine Corps’ legacy Humvee fleet. The military expects to see the new vehicles in 2018 and 2019.

Seems like it would be a LOT of weight to be mounted on the roof of the vehicle?  Won't be able to store much ammo?

I'm assuming they are thinking along the lines of the 25mm or 30mm versions found on some warships.  If so, won't the barrel stick out just a wee bit?  Operator behind the turret, since the vehicle isn't large enough to fit a RMS console inside.

Me thinks someone went public with something they got from the "good idea!" fairy before they actually thought through the technical details...

It's feasible to mount a 20mm cannon on the roof of a HMMWV. Here's a picture of an El Salvadorean with a 20mm
cannon.

Although I think a 20mm gun on a Hummer would probably result in a lot of shake, rattle and roll for the crew inside.

I wonder if it isn't this gun - the ASP-30.

Like the 50 and the GMG it is self-powered/recoil-operated.

Nevermind - should have read more first.  Still,  I have always liked the ASP as an upgrade.

As I understand it Colin, it is a GD truck for the 3-D battlefield.  It has been determined that an armoured vehicle is necessary for all duties.  Consequently the same 7 tonne GVW truck can be used for a staff car, liason vehicle, convoy escort, light cargo and light recce as well as weapons carrier.
