I'm curious about the reasoning behind war.

I suggest, as already suggested, reading some of John Keegans books such as "A History of Warfare" and so on. Invest some time into almost a thousand pages in "Total War" and, if you are that passionate about it, see about purchasing the "World At War" television documentary  - I believe it was on History, PBS or WNED. There are about 30 episodes so you'd probably be better off to order online.
