I could see a use case for the 28t swimmer in the European arctic, but not much else. Neither fish nor fowl.

Having seen a variety of disastrous swim attempts in peacetime, I think it’s sheer insanity in a combat under fire concept.
Maybe it briefs well.


So to me, the LAV2.0 series and BsV10’s are protected mobility, that wouldn’t attempt a swim under contact.

*by swim I also mean any muddy, swampy soggy nastiness.



I may see a slim possibility for a limited number of those 28t for Light Armored Recce supporting lighter vehicles/ but I’m not sure I can justify another vehicle type. I think I’d rather opt for UGV assets, and Heavier IFV/CFV
 
Nothing light about 28 tons lol. >18 tons and able to fit in a herc with its crew. Thats light imo. Especially for armoured recce/cav platforms.
 
So Britain has not committed to a CUAS course of action yet.

If Britain is bulding to spec for Ukraine, with its own money (or EU and Canadian money?), and building the capability to build and adapt at pace, what would be the advantage of committing to a fleet-wide solution while the specs keep changing?

There is advantage to holding off to discover "the final solution". In 2022 the unknown unknowns allowed the possibility of T72s in London and nukes in Washington. That possibility is passed and Russia is largely contained. China, like the rest of the world has no idea what Trump is going to role tomorrow and Venezuela, Iran and Canada, along with the rest of the energy market is completely off balance and in a poor position to launch any major offensives.

I believe there is time for the Spanish Civil War to play itself out in Ukraine so that it will be possible to determine later what the optimum solutions are and c what the optimum technologies will be.

Britain, and Canada, and the US will only find themselves pressured if Vlad can figure out how to launch a broad offensive. And I don't think that is in the cards for a couple of years.

Do you put it on detect mode and it just scans continuously? Do you have to manually target off that?

Anyone have details?

The radar really needs to be viewed solely as Fire Control/Targeting Control.
It isn’t much of a detection tool, as it’s a LW narrow beam system.

The system can STC once the radar has the target.
So it’s more manual orientation to get radar looking out at a target - then with radar augmentation on the targeting.


My understanding is that the system can be setup to take external over air sensor data from FAAD C2 / ADAM Cell to align the system for onboard radar acquisition, like the AN/TWQ-1 Avenger and the M-SHORAD

There are a few old AD folks here, and a couple of us "almost an AD" guys.

Canada went Tango Uniform on ground based air defence almost 15 years ago. The issue is that all of us older folks dealt with an AD system designed for fast movers and helicopters. It's a whole new world out there with everything for tiny quadcopters to loitering munitions to long range cruise missiles, guided cannon-launched projectiles and the odd helicopter and fast mover working at stand off distances etc etc. It's a constantly evolving field that requires constantly evolving responses all of which need to function both at scale and at economy of scale.

To say that Ukraine has created a revolution in both offensive and defensive systems is the understatement of the last four years. AD is a system of systems that works in layers. That's real easy to say but real hard to accomplish in a coherent manner especially with so many manufacturers in the field each looking to grab a part of the multi billion dollar pies.

The simple answer to your question is: it depends on the situation and on the specific weapon systems in your inventory.

I get the sense that a lot of the detection comes from comms with the net, eo/ir and acoustic sensors, all passive. The radar is likely active only for direction.

The onboard FC Radar (and its integrated software) is distance, speed, heading and pitch; to provide a firing solution.

Some purpose built VSHORAD gun systems can take feeds from external and use them in conjunction with their FCS and to remain entirely passive. (some systems have no integral radar and rely entirely on external feed data).

My understanding is that this isn’t the case on the RS4 and 6 systems, (they were not a purpose build LLAD/C-UAS setup) and need to use their radar on the target to get a firing solution.
