Iran Super Thread- Merged

Qatar is saying that 17% of their Nat Gas production has been knocked out so far up to a period of 5yrs.

The potential total loss to them is 100$ billion USD over that 5yrs.

Add that into the additional 200$ billion in needed US military costs and those 2 items are a total cost of 300$ billion USD.
The outcome in terms of dollars spent, opportunity lost could surpass 1$ trillion USD.
Honestly not that sad for Qatar, they are big on the FA side of things and never get the FO bit.

Shooting down cheap drones with expensive munitions is a winning miss match for the Iranians.
At the extremes, yes, but it depends on the capacities of the competing economies.

Unfortunately for the Iranians, it isn't just a drone tennis match in which they serve and the US and Israel respond. There are munitions flowing the other way and the "broken window" costs are going to be immense.

Interesting that some of the richest nations on earth have not really spent very much on defending their infrastructure or preparing for such an event, even as Ukraine has shown exactly what Shahed style drones can do.
Again what are the 7 frigates and 18 corvette’s that the Saudis and the UAE have doing right now to secure their borders?
Inept, incompetent and incapable.

The Ukranians have arrived, and have already made comments on how inefficient the use of interceptors has been so far.

The officer said he was astonished to hear reports of Gulf states firing as many as eight Patriot interceptor missiles (each worth more than $3 million) at a single target, even using the expensive systems to hit cheap drones.

Ukrainian troops said they used only one or two missiles to down Russian ballistic missiles. However, the interception rate varied as Russia changed tactics, Bronk said.

The data from Ukrainian Patriot crew missions has been shared with allies who also use the system. However, the US and its allies in the Gulf do not appear to have paid attention to the complex calculations Ukraine has made to improve intercept rates. “I don’t understand what they had been doing, what they have been looking at for the four years we’ve been fighting,” Ukrainian officer said.

That's the why they want them. Competent leaders there start thinking they can do better than their leaders......

I get on other issues. But what exactly have they done to Iran here?

Also, if we're going to start talking about foreign policy on moral terms, not sure that the Americans should be giving the lectures....

When the US Navy can't keep the Strait open, and successfully protect its own assets, I'm not exactly sure what you expect a country with a population smaller than the Lower Mainland to do. Also, all things told, they have probably achieved more than we would have in the same situation. So I would caution being smug.

The US 10yr bond spiked up today to 4.39%. That’s up from 3.96% from 27 Feb.

The coming economic crisis will probably end this war.

632 AD enters the chat. Qatar is 85% Sunni.....

Which till 28 Feb has not resulted in the one way drones and ballistic missiles targeting their infrastructure.

I get not liking Qatar. I share that sentiment.

However, in this case, you're letting emotion cloud your judgement here. The only reason they are getting hit is because the US and Israel started hostilities while they host American forces.

I have to roll my eyes when Qatar, SA, Kuwait and the rest of the Gulf States are presented as some kind of innocent bystanders in this war. The US forces that are bombing Iran are literally based in those countries.

If hypothetically Chinese forces based in North Korea were to attack South Korea would you not expect South Korea and the US to strike North Korean targets, not just the specific sites used by the Chinese forces?

Meanwhile back in the school yard...

From CNN:

Trump says the "fight is militarily won" and calls allies "cowards" over Strait of Hormuz

President Donald Trump on Friday said the fight to stop a nuclear-powered Iran is “militarily won,” while lashing out at NATO allies for not helping the United States and calling them “cowards” for not helping open the Strait of Hormuz.

“Now that fight is Militarily WON, with very little danger for them, they complain about the high oil prices they are forced to pay, but don’t want to help open the Strait of Hormuz, a simple military maneuver that is the single reason for the high oil prices,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

“So easy for them to do, with so little risk. COWARDS, and we will REMEMBER!” Trump added.
The president also lamented that NATO allies didn’t join the US in the war against Iran and again argued that the alliance would be powerless without the US.

“Without the U.S.A., NATO IS A PAPER TIGER! They didn’t want to join the fight to stop a Nuclear Powered Iran,” he said.

Trump started the week by calling on allies to help reopen the strait, but later said the US didn’t need them.

“We no longer ‘need,’ or desire, the NATO Countries’ assistance — WE NEVER DID!” Trump said on Tuesday.

Dude. There is no emotion involved in pointing out a fact. My not insubstantial history of working in the region has informed me cognitively.

Not everything is based on "feels". With me - seldom if at all.

Have a great day

The latest Russian play.

Two people familiar with the U.S.-Russia negotiations said that such a proposal was made by Russian envoy Kirill Dmitriev to Trump administration envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner during their meeting last week in Miami.

The U.S. rejected the proposal, the people added. They, like all other officials cited in this article, were granted anonymity due to the sensitivity of the discussions.

Nevertheless, the sheer existence of such a proposal has sparked concern among European diplomats, who worry Moscow is trying to drive a wedge between Europe and the U.S. at a critical moment for transatlantic relations.
