Ken Dryden PC OC, 1947-2025

Mr. Dryden once visited CFE (Lahr and Baden) under the auspices of being a guest speaker for the "Canadian Club of Southern Germany". At the time, the president of the Canadian Club was the CO of 4 Fd Amb (an appointed secondary duty), but the day to day arrangements for the Canadian Club guests fell on an officer in the unit (I was the unlucky sod for a while - unfortunately wasn't for Dryden's visit). Some of the guests did not generate much enthusiasm on the part of other units to partake in "entertaining" them while they at CFE. Ken did not fall into that category.

While 444 Squadron (they shared the marg with us) didn't usually volunteer to have anything to do with our visitors (though it did seem that they made lots of offers when the guest was an attractive female), when they heard that Dryden was coming, offered to take him on a famil flight in a Kiowa. On the day (it was immediately after lunch), at first it was difficult to find a flying suit big enough that he could squeeze into; once in the air, the flight was in the best tradition of nap of the earth. Apparently, a heavy lunch and flying didn't mix. Ken offered to help clean up but the offer was graciously declined.
