Length of time a recruitment file usually held open?

Lord it‘s been a while since I posted here...

First some history... then my questions.... hopefully someone out there will have an answer..

Last July, I submitted all of my paperwork for recruitment, got an interview, did the aptitude test, etc... I was signing up as a Sig Op officer under the DEO. After the selection board was convened, the Recruitment Officer told me that unfortunately I had not been selected to go to the IAP that sitting.

A couple of weeks later my wife was offered a promotion/transfer (she works for the RCMP). We discussed this and thought it would be a great opportunity for our family. We would be moving from Regina to Edmonton.

About two weeks after being offered and accepting the promotion, the recruitment office came back to me and said a spot had opened up for me.

I had to decline, because I would have been starting Basic about a week after our move date to Edmonton. We have a 2 year old daughter, so I needed to be there to get her settled, find daycare... you know.. the typical "house husband" kind of thing. However, I asked them to keep my file open for as long as they could, for when I could come back to it.

Now that everything is back to a sense of normalcy, I want to get them to take a look at me again. I have a phone call into the recruiting office in Regina, but I was wondering if anyone here would know if indeed my file could still be open, or if it is closed, can it simply be reopened.. Is there a time limit on this applciation (as there is a time limit on the results for the physical).

Not that I didn‘t enjoy writing the aptitude test.. but all of my references et. al. are in a different city, so it would be a pain in the ascii to have to fill all of that out again.

Your application file is only good for one year. So everything in your file will no longer be valid by July this year. You should contact the recruiting centre in Edmonton or the one in Regina and see if your file is still open and going before the selection board again in May (I believe most Officer selection boards are convening at that time, but don‘t quote me on that.)

You will also have to do your physical test again if it‘s been over half a year since you last did it.

IF they have closed your file already, you might have to re-submit your application...not really sure on that...you gotta check with the recruiting centre.

Thanks for the quick response, Greywolf... I haven‘t done the physical yet, but I am not too concerned (I have lost wight and done a lot more running since last year).

Gives me hope that the file is indeed still open and will get sent in for the next board...

Hmm, have the people at the recruiting centre told you that your file is indeed still open and going before the next selection board? If not, then you have to let them know that‘s what you want, or they might assume you‘re not interested anymore.

I am going for Supply Technician (1st choice), Resource Management Support Clerk (2nd choice), and Medical Technician (3rd choice). I‘m hoping to get a reply (an offer!!? ) sometime in April.

Moving to Edmonton from Regina has been great. I live maybe 5 minutes away from the base... so I am kind of hoping when I do get in that I will eventually get posted back to Edmonton.

My brother in law is working in Shilo right now... He did a lot of training in Gagetown. He and his wife said they didn‘t like it much, but I think that‘s because they are both from Winnipeg and were homesick... I would like to eventually get out to Kingston... it looks like an absolutely beautiful place... but I like Edmonton very much right now...

I grew up near Edmonton and moved ‘Out East‘ to Kingston about 5 years ago Kingston is quite beautiful, especially near the base and waterfront. However, there is a lot of poverty (and problems that the 9 prisons bring). It is also not in the slightest bit multicultural, unless you mean British (Queen‘s is an exception).
Another consideration is that there is next to no industry left there, so unless you want a government job when you get out my advice would be not to retire there. This also would be a consideration for your spouse finding a job.

Ah, rant over. Can you tell I miss Edmonton?

In theory, your file could still be open. It may remain open for up to two years. For example, I get sit-reps from CFRC with incomplete apps dating back to 2002. Some files sit there stagnant for a while, and CFRC can do nothing until it hits the magic **remove from file** date.

Not that an open file means much, as you‘ll have to re-do all the tests/exams (each test/exam has a different expiration date).

I‘m not too sure what CFRC would do with your file if you declined an employment offer.

Did they ask you if you wanted to close your file, or did you say that you wanted your file closed?

Most often, an app‘s file will remain open for 2 years or until the app indicates that he/she does not want to continue with the process.

I just spoke to the CFRC‘s...

The one in Regina closed the file... I never asked them to, but I guess if they hadn‘t heard from me in a while.. But I spoke with Edmonton, and they will do a file transfer. I may need to fill in a couple of things to get me current... but I should find that out after a clerk reviews the file in a week or so...

In your case it would not make a difference if your file was closed or not. Your letters of reference must be dated within 12 months of the board date so start getting new ones ready (They don‘t have to live in the same city). The interview, PT test, and background check expire after 6 months so they will need to be updated. You will probably have to do an update medical as well. The aptitude test is good forever or until they change the test so you will not have to retake the CFAT.
