Liberal Minority Government 2025 - ???

Junket-Gate? Probably not....

30 MPs accepted $230K in free travel last year, mostly for trips to Taiwan

Ethics commissioner's annual report details sponsored travel by MPs

Members of Parliament accepted more than $230,000 in flights, hotels and gifts from foreign governments, advocacy groups and private companies last year according to an annual report from the conflict of interest and ethics commissioner.

Konrad von Finckenstein's report on the sponsored travel accepted by MPs for 2024 reveals that 30 MPs accepted trips to locations around the world including Colombia, the Ivory Coast, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, Jordan, France and Germany.

But more than half of the $230,000 in travel accepted by federal legislators was paid for by Taiwan, which spent just over $126,000 bringing MPs to their country.

That number divided by 30 MP’s is less than 8k per MP.
Looking at those destinations, willing to bet that a fair number of the flights would be business class because of the distance travelled.
Nothing to see here in my opinion.

Agreed provided that the rules don't state that accepting gratuities from outside sources is verboten.

It would be foolish to thumb our nose at anyone. Least of all the States. I would be trying to establish new chains of supply while maintaining existing ones.

Investing in Continental Defence / Golden Dome to maintain trading relations with the US while finally preparing to defence ourselves is no bad thing.

Likewise, spending Canadian dollars in Europe AND in Asia to establish ties there is also not a bad thing.

Currently we are spending 75% of a very small pot in the US. If we are growing the pot then we can maintain the same dollar supply to the US while bringing in new suppliers from other countries.

I’m curious, how do you mean that?

Back to another Scots philosopher -

As much as Carney has trafficked in principle (ESG/DEI/Net Zero) I now find myself hoping that those words were penned to serve a purpose, namely his own self-interest.

Now I am hoping to see if he can backtrack on those principles while keeping his reputation intact.

Eg

Bill C-69 (No more pipelines)
Bill C-48 (No more tankers)
Emissions Cap
etc.

....

I don't think he can repeal those and keep his Eastern Faction happy.
Can he, however, work with that legislation and still deliver pipelines and, as requested by the Eagle Spirit coalition, a Dixon Channel carve-out, to let tankers get to open water from Prince Rupert?
As I have noted over the years it is not necessarily that rule book that matters but rather the person that reads the rule book.

If Carney can put in place pipeline friendly bureaucrats with a PMO mandate and they can deliver the pipelines that would settle the separatist discussion in the West (and it is not just an Alberta thing - you find pockets in BC, Saskatchewan and Manitoba - particularly outside the major cities).

But he is going to have to give Danielle something - and a pipeline, or at least a corridor for a pipeline, with or without changes in the acts, would be the best indicator.

I also think that his best cover would be supplied by:

1 demonstrate that the demand is driven by First Nations who are willing to give "social licence" to pipelines over their traditional lands in exchange for a share in the profits.
2 move some of those corridors into protected lands, national parks, as part of the 30% of Canada to be protected.

That item 2 may seem counter productive but if the Corridors were Green Corridors - no development beyond the utilities transiting the corridors - perhaps there is something there.

For those of you that are familiar with MCCs (Motor Control Centres) - the Green Corridors could act as the Power Bus. Communities outside of the Corridors could then tie in and draw on the power supply.

PS ....

If building rails and burying pipelines why not run another pipe and feed the electricity lines down it as well? And another for fiber optics? Rather than build pylons all over the place.

Moving this discussion

The question was, essentially, how does Carney become all things to all people. How does he back track on emissions caps, tanker moratoriums and no more pipelines?

National Security has a new sibling. National Interest. A new Trump Card.

....

With that, the Western Premiers (Eby, Smith, Moe, Kinew) and the Territories are all punting for a Rupert to Churchill Utility Corridor along with an Arctic Security Corridor connecting Yellowknife to Gray's Bay.

Part of Kinew's Ask is icebreakers in Hudson Bay to extend the Navigation Season. This plays into our discussions about arctic logistics and moving and supporting troops in the North.

As a related item

From the Main Estimates released a couple of days ago I learned that the Federal government subsidizes Marine Atlantic's RoRo ferries to the tune of 182 MCAD (2025-26).

Perhaps Wab can secure a similar support for Hudson Bay communities.

Huh, interesting. Sounds like we may hear more of substance pretty quickly on that. Introduced in HoC before Canada Day maybe?

Curious - novice question here. How does the ice in Hudson Bay/James Bay compare to the ice on Lake Superior? When does the ice start in both places, when does it end, how thick does it get in both places? Does the entire length of the Hudson Strait ice up?

Interesting questions. I would also like to know how they compare to the Baltic and the Gulf of Bothnia. Also, how far is it from Baffin Island (any point) to year round open water?

I'd be willing to bet that on March 7 Lake Superior is still pretty much 85+% ice covered.

Perhaps, but currently it is 'community' (singular) for Manitoba. Although nothing is etched in stone, the federal government's responsibilities to its territories are different than that of its provinces.

No answers, and no clue how fresh water ice differs from salt water ice, but Lake Superior seldom freezes completely. The Seaway closes for a couple of months each winter primarily because of ice in the locks/straits/narrows/harbours of the system.

Before I would have said time to change the constitution but thinking of moving there so don't touch. 😁

But ....

Doug Ford has been explicit in asking for a James Bay Port - another community
Quebec has been looking at a Cree port on La Grande at Chisasibi - another community
Quebec has been looking at an Inuit port on The Great Whale at Kuujjuarapik - another community
Nunavut has gold mines in the Chesterfield Inlet - Baker Lake area - another community
Quebec has developed a nickel port at Deception Bay, just around the corner from Hudson Bay - another community
Nunavut is looking at a railway from the Mary River mine to Steensby Inlet on Baffin Island across from Hudson Bay - another community
And Wab is looking at two ports, Churchill and Port Nelson - two more communities.

We are already shipping via ice-breaking freighters from Nanisivik/Pond Inlet, Deception Bay and Voisey Bay as well as by conventional freighters that come as far south as Churchill on charters.

That is a constitutional requirement. Read the Newfoundland Act part of the constitution.

If I was Wab I would be asking for equivalent services. I am guessing he would have backing.

@lenaitch

You have raised the issue of harbours needing dredging.

Apparently Canada needs houses. Houses are built on sand and aggregate.

Whitby, Yorkshire - home port of James Cook and Grandma Minnie - a small hole in the wall port with more yachting than commercial activity

....

In the Yorkshire words of Grandma Minnie: "Where there's muck there's money!"

Deadhead sand to the south.

These voices?

Or these voices?

Or the voice you referenced @The Bread Guy?

I noticed that the Throne speech pageantry was very careful to engage a national voice from each of the Inuit, "First Nations" and Metis. Even had the quintessential Canadian - a Red River Metis fiddler. Morgan Grace Music

Zackly! Not to mention the AFN represents 630+ communities - noooooooooooooooooooooo problem reaching a single, unified Indigenous consensus on these things ....

A deep water port only makes sense if it is economically viable, unless the government is into building white elephants.

I'm not sure Dougie has articulated what he would do with his shiny new deep water port.

A fairly recent study on the Chisasibi port proposal found it was uneconomical.

Given the vast distances in the Arctic, building a deep water port for a privately owned gold mine that has a limited life expectancy makes little sense. You can fly the end product out of a gold mine in a helicopter.

I wasn't aware that the Government of Nunavut was looking at building a railway at Mary River. I was aware that the company was.

I realize a rising tide lifts all boats but building a bunch of public infrastructure to benefit individual for-profit corporations doesn't sound like 'nation building' to me.

If I had to use sand and aggregate shipped in from the Arctic to build my house, I likely couldn't afford it. This assumes is it suitable for construction use. Silt isn't.
