Liberal Minority Government 2025 - ???

We aren't beggars, and we can always choose to not give more money to China, so they can come up with better ways to kill us.
With the Canadian auto industry being told by the US administration that we can make parts and raw materials, what do you think we are? What will happen to the Canadian auto industry if Ford, GM, Stellantis simply up and leave? What, we make our own homemade auto company?

If we need someone to fill that void, and in an industry that has no real competitors, yeah, I don't like China, but if the choice is China or nothing I take China.

If you choose China, eventually you will have nothing. They will make sure of it.

China seems a lot more stable and less ready to explode than Europe.
Needing more info, I used the AI google and according to it (prone to errors, I know), the European economy is more stable than the Chinese economy.

From google AI (again, I don't know enough about China to directly form my opinion yet)
"No, the Chinese economy is not stable, as it faces significant challenges including slowing real and nominal growth, persistent deflationary pressures, high levels of debt, and a struggling real estate sector. While China's government has implemented stimulus measures and aims to achieve its annual growth targets, the economy's reliance on investment over consumption and the consequences of overbuilding in the property market point to a fragile and unbalanced economic structure. "

Don’t lose sight of the fact that any major Chinese investment here would likely be subjected to national security review under the Investment Canada Act. Very possible that that could end up being a show stopper if we’re concerned about Chinese spyware in cars.

I am concerned about Chinese Spyware, yes.

Likely just fantasy on my part but we should have a truly Canadian car manufacturer. If I recall correctly the Soviets purchased an obsolete Fiat model and turned it into the Lada. The finished product was a POS that was horribly designed and even more poorly manufactured (my brother-in-law owned one). Still if Canadians have the national will, I don’t think it’s impossible that we can have a Canadian produced car that suits our needs and isn’t too expensive for most people. It would help to shore up the loss of parts suppliers and the steel industry. We definitely have the talent.

Other nations with smaller economies than ours have managed to compete. I’m not saying we can be all things to all people but I do think the market potential is there. Otherwise, we are doomed to become what we’ve tried so hard not to be…glorified hewers of wood and drawers of water. Which is precisely what the U.S. wants us to be…that is, immediately prior to our becoming the 51st state.

You remember Holden?

Australian automaker. Closed in 2017. Just couldn't compete, and that's with imports being so expensive due to shipping. The level of tariffs required to shield a Canadian automaker would likely run afoul of many of our FTA

Too bad Canada wouldn’t become a resource exporting nation, i mean with the worlds third largest O&G reserves and more timber etc then most nations could dream of, let’s continue to mute those sectors and try and battle it out with countries over whether we build their cars or not.

Frankly, I’m not sure if we can trust ANY foreign car manufacturer to set up manufacturing in this country. The Americans will simply say if those manufacturers don’t leave Canada then, through tariffs or some other threat, they won’t be able to sell their cars in the U.S. Trump, Lutnick (aka NutDick) and others in the administration can smell blood and are intentionally out to destroy us.

If the choice don't sell cars, only parts and raw materials like lutnick says, or we bring in BYD or some magical European automaker others seem to think will come here

The thing is the USA will put extreme pressure on anyone looking to set up shop here. The only country that could not care less would probably be China. Germans would cave for sure. South Korean, Japanese, they cave for sure. China, not so much.

That said, the yanks have laid their cards on the table. They don't want us to have a auto industry, period.

They don’t want us to exist, period. That’s what we have to get our head around.
