Part of it for sure, but they also have access to cheap batteries. Batteries being the most expensive part of the EV, that in and of itself helps keep costs down.
Dump those cheap batteries on a boat, ship them to Vancouver, put them on a train to Ontario, and you still have a pretty cheap battery.
It would definitely cost more to produce, and thus sell at a higher price than in China, but if BYD is a legitimate company and not just a Chinese subsidy pig, it should still be the most affordable EV on the market, even if made in Canada.

Trump is LASER focused on re-establishing the US as the auto building powerhouse of the Americas. Allowing a Chinese auto manufacturing company to establish a foothold in "his" market will guarantee he economically and politically punishes the hell out of us and China.
