Gotta hand it to SAAB - they've gone all in on trying to build that relationship with us

Manufacturing the Gripen-E not only for our own needs but for Ukraine as well. Tech transfers, IP access and transfers, etc

And now their offering to build AEW aircraft here in Canada using Bombardier planes as the platform.



This all plays well for us, especially these days.

But how do the Swedes benefit from all this Manufacturing of their kit being done in Canada rather than Sweden?

Well one of their downfalls has been they cant ramp up production and deliver in time frames that most international customers want, so maybe we play into a long term international manufacturing plan?

I'm not an expert on the subject but IIRC that licensing agreements cover some of that cost recovery...

This. I don't know how many planes they make in a year, but if they cannot ramp up production to deliver in a reasonable timeframe, I imagine that is a dealbreaker.

But with Canada on board, again, 4 times their size, and industrial capacity to spare now that the USA is trying to pull all of North America's manufacturing capacity back within US borders, it would make sense from their perspective to partner with us, get more deals and planes built.

Win win.

So are they looking to double production from 2 to 4 planes a month?

SAAB's target for a production rate is an annual production rate of 20 to 30 Gripen E/F fighter jets per year in the near future. This equates to approximately 1.6 to 2.5 aircraft per month

Sweden has ordered 60 of the latest Gripen E model and Saab is increasing capacity in Linkoping, aiming to be able to produce 20-30 planes per year at the plant in a couple of years. Saab is also building Gripens in Brazil.

20-30 a year works out to 1.6 to 2.5 planes a month, so ya, you're spot on.

I guess they currently make around 1 a month.

Yeah so if they want faster, they need a new production line, combined with Global eye, we are talking 13,000 high to medium skill jobs in Canada not to mention a cut for the canadian government for any Gripen sales built in canada

If there were some kind of national aircraft-building plan to go along with a national ship-building plan....maybe.

who says its a one off? SAAB doesn't strike me as a company that would let a factory go idle, they already are working on the Gripen replacement, and other programs, my guess is this helps long term viability of their products

Sweden isn't like Canada and continually support their defense industries and don't go generations between sales.

Maybe they drag us into being responsible defense manufacturers.

Which also gives us a foot in the door for a much larger defense partnership, AT-4s? Carl G, T-7 Red Hawks for fighter trainers? anti-aircraft weapons? ammunition manufacturing? there is huge potential for partnerships
