India wants to buy any energy product it can from Canada and its officials are urging the federal government to streamline approvals for various projects so it can tap into new supplies to feed a rapidly growing country with relatively few natural resources of its own.

That's the message India's high commissioner to Canada, Dinesh Patnaik, relayed in an interview with CBC News before Prime Minister Mark Carney left for a five-day visit to the country. It's a trip that will be laser-focused on cutting new business deals and getting negotiations for a free trade agreement underway as part of a push to diversify from the American market.

"On energy, there is an appetite which even Canada cannot fulfill and we are willing to buy whatever Canada is offering on crude, on LPG, on LNG," Patnaik said, referring to oil and gas products.

I'd also demand my MP push for an investigation into the circles him and his spouse ran in, and whose shoulders they rubbed with.

What about normalizing trade to pre-Meng Wanzhou levels makes them besties? Especially when our largest customer, who stabbed us in the back in said case, has decided to self-immolate?

I get the hostility towards China, as they go beyond trying to just control former Chinese citizens living abroad, and putting down dissent/criticism.
India is a more interesting case. Why are we really mad at them? Because they assassinated what they deemed a threat on Cdn soil and got caught right? I'm sure the US, Israel, and Russia have done the same, and have just done it better and quieter. Hell Israel loves using Canadian passports to get in and out of places on kill missions.

All that to say is as a sovereign nation, we should be exploiting our trade advantages whenever and wherever we can.

"Threat" is subjective here. They murdered an activist.

Canadian law-enforcement (including RCMP) have warned about other cases of Sikh activists being intimidated and threatened. In some cases the threats were credible enough where they received official "duty to warn" notices from police.

RCMP and other Canadian agencies linked violent activity by organized crime groups, notably the Bishnoi gang, to Indian (government) interests. Those include extortion, shootings, murder-for-hire, and other criminal violence. [The Bishnoi gang being designated a terrorist entity here because of it's involvement in intimidation and crime]. Authorities have suggested the gang is acting on behalf of the Indian government in targeting certain individuals and communities.


Foreign interference and coercion is an issue too where establish sources said Indian diplomats and agents are using clandestine activities to collect information on Canada's South Asian community. Recall our current government bent over backwards going out of their way to try and wave off any investigation and action into foreign interference.

All that to say is as a sovereign nation, we should be exploiting our trade advantages whenever and wherever we can.

We can engage with India in trade without chalking their behavior up to everyone does it, big deal. The Liberal government is saying India's garbage behavior is all cleaned up, I'd like to see the receipts on that. I prefer not to see Canada turned into a proxy battleground for all these other countries drama, or give them a bunch of in-roads to our Parliament.
