I'll take Trump anyday over CCP.

The problem with that is the CCP will prob be there for a very long time, Trump has 3 years max, that is a blip on the radar comparatively. I'd characterize it as this: I'll take the USA any day over CCP.

What I find troubling is I've heard quite senior people speak virulently about the USA, but when the subject of the CCP comes up its "meh, we may as well learn mandarin now..."

And this is objectively true. There is no advantageous deal to be had with Trump’s U.S. over and above what we already have. He has shifted the U.S. foreign policy strongly towards mercantilism. That’s a fundamental shift in their approach of economics - and a perplexing adoption of economic thought that became obsolete and largely went out the door in western democracies because in the long run it lessens wealth. But, Trump being Trump, it’s easy to see how an economic philosophy of hoarding as a measure of wealth and of zero sum trade relations would appeal to him.

And this means the only deal he’s interested in with us, the only one he sees as a ‘win’, is where he walks away with more and we walk away with less, rather than one where we trade more freely, innovate more freely, and we each make the most of our respective advantages.

So, our government is right in general to seek those opportunities elsewhere. Usually that will just be reduce barriers and let the market show the opportunities. In some things we’ll need to be really frickin’ careful though.

But yeah, Trump’s gonna be pissed. The EV tariff on China was an act of solidarity with the U.S. Maybe Carney can soften it with some comment about how we no longer see a need to align with Biden’s tariffs or something.

Multiple visits to work out a deal to drop the tariffs leading to nothing.

The USA has made it clear that it doesn't want to work with anyone, Canada included. So is China the first choice? No. But if it's willing to work with Canada on TRADE then that's what we need to do.

America seems to believe that we will simply stand pat, allow them to try to hurt our economy and we will do nothing in response. This is a shot across the bow saying, hey, we have options if you're not willing to work with us.

I will never, ever own one of their vehicles. Lots of Canadians will be happy to see some increased competition though

Could be that Canadian registered Chinese manufactured vehicles would have to have some features disabled IOT be allowed to cross into the US temporarily. Permanent importation, such as when a Canadian is in the US on a work permit or as a settler, might be forbidden.
