Liberal (Minority/Majority) Government 2025 - ???

We still need to make sure we diversify. China will weld those ties as weapons when needed to decimate our industries.

Can’t put all our eggs in one basket, the US is showing us that.
I'm not sure where this idea that by regaining access to the Chinese market for some of our products and in return allowing China to export a limited number of EV's to Canada (which Canadian are under zero obligation to buy) somehow translates into us putting "all our eggs in one basket" or not diversifying.

We are regaining some market access in China and in return allowing China to regain some market access to Canada. That's how trade works (but don't tell Trump that because he believes trade can be made to flow in one direction only).

We're certainly not limiting our efforts to expand and diversify our trade to other countries outside China but don't be surprised if our trade with a country with the 2nd largest economy and population in the World ends up being somewhat more than our trade with 2 million Slovenians.

Definitely we need to ensure there are controls to protect against security threats, etc. No argument there.

might be a limited number of baskets within the basket though. Witness the canola situation. Are we overly dependent on one basket-China to export canola to? Is there a remedy?

Like most of our current trade profile, not just for canola, we're over reliant on a very few markets:

China deal eases pressure, but research indicates Canadian canola market still at risk

Report says Canadian canola is overreliant on two major markets: China and the United States

Of course he does ....

ALOT of people are pissed off with Unlucky Lutnick because he caused them to miss their dessert on Tuesday evening after dinner.

I read today that Mexico gets its Canola oil from the US. The obvious pitch to them would be, buy your Canola from us and not the US.
Which means more planting, china buying our beef means herds will increase in size for once. All points to more supply, which can decrease domestic prices

It depends on if there’s enough feed or grass on the range for them. Cattle production can’t be boosted as easily as widgets when feed is a limiting factor.

Very true, herd size has dramatically dropped since 2007, it would take a long time to build it up, and requires good growing seasons to feed them.

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre offered some rare praise for the prime minister’s speech in Davos, Switzerland, earlier this week, calling it "well-crafted and eloquently delivered" — but in a six-page statement released Thursday, he also criticized Mark Carney’s record on reducing Canada's reliance on the United States.
How to know a speech is really good.

Just kidding, good on PP.

And access to water, whether it’s God given rain or groundwater, more cattle means more grass and water.

Dammit I was gonna post the same story with the same gif.

Yeah- what an adorable little fit of pique by Trump. It’s already quite obvious the whole western world, including us, has been at best politely noncommittal, while having zero real interest.

When the initial invitation was made, before the terms and conditions were made clear, it seemed initially like a tight knit group focused on Gaza. Once it became clear Trump just wants his own security council, with blackjack and hookers, any non-dictatorial players lost interest fast. He’s gonna put together a round table of autocracies but that’s about it.

That’s not to say that, given the heavy middle eastern presence, this may not bring some of the right people to the same table to talk on Gaza. But clearly his ambitions for this body go well beyond that. They will not be achieved.

I ended up posting it in the Hamas thread before I saw it was already here.

So let me get this straight....

Trump asks Canada for one billion Canadian tax dollars to join some globalist scheme to rebuild the Middle East pitched at the World Economic Forum.

And the Carney Liberals essentially declined / got disinvited.

It's going to be interesting to see how Maple MAGA and the pro-Trump WEF conspiracy crowd spin this one!
