Light Armoured Regt 1970‘s

In the 8 CH (PL) in Petawawa in the Fall of 1977, A Sqn was Ferret, with three five-car troops.   When we got back from Cyprus in the Spring of 1979, the Ferrets were gone, and Recce Sqn became A Sqn, took jeeps on Ex to Borden, then six new Grizzlies to train drivers in Sep, then four Cougars to train two serials of gunners (shift work) in Jan 1980.

In the fall of 1977, B Sqn was three seven car troops - six Lynx, and an M113A1 for the Tp Ldr (reason: the AN/PPS-15 GSR box would not fit in the Lynx).

I think we went all Lynx in 1980 (give or take), when somebody said "So, don't bring the box?"

In the Fall of 1977, C Sqn was the Trg Sqn, with a load of TQ3s (including yours truly) and also provided a 60 Regtl Recce Tp on order.

B Sqn became D Sqn in the Spring of 1978, just before going to Ft Hood Texas to qual on the M60A1 with Tank Table VIII.

Just before we went to Cyprus in the Fall of 1978, we changed the name to Recce Sqn, as we changed from Recce Regts back to Armoured Regts, to await the AVGP Cougar.

I have the "Light Armoured Regt" pam around here someplace.   Bloody house is turning into a museum.

Does anyone have anymore info or sites that would have info on stuff like the Fennek?  My latest copy of Jane's AFV is a little out of date!

The Fennek strikes me as a reasonable veh for 'light' recce.  From the guys I have talked to, the Coyote seems too big for its job (but yes, it does bring a lot to the table with all of that weapons and surv gear).  My personal opinion is to look for something more Ferret like that is a bit inclusive of the modern threat (a fully encloseable (but with ability to see!) highly mine/IED resistant and MOBILE) but is still easy enough to hide in an OP.

I am looking forward to seeing some Gwagons (the only one I have seen is an extremely luxuriant civilian model at the car dealer down the street from where I work :-\)  and hearing from the guys how well they work doing the job.

It can be and was possible in the Ferret, we practiced it lots. The crew commander would watch over the back and guide the driver over the IC. A good crew could get up quite a bit of speed. Did so on more than one occasion. ;) Confidence and trust in your crew is all it took. Stand still shooting back or run, take your pick. You only backed up far enough to get turned.

The other option is to have a second driver in the rear - some of the German ACs in WW II had this option, I believe, especially the large 6 and 8 wheelers.

The 8 wheeled Spahpanzer Luchs can do it as well - the radio operator in the back faces the rear and has rudimentary steering capability in reverse.

and like the Ferret....just as fast in Reverse as Forward.
