I was just curious if there was/is any talk about reopening the London base for RCR, a friend of mine wants to know...I did a quick search and didn't find anything significant..However if there isn't talk, why was it ever closed???(I was just a young'n then)

I doubt that there is anything on the horizon about re-establishing anything in London for the RCR.  It was closed in the early 90's if I remember correctly.

Many of the buildings that the RCR used to occupy have been torn down, and much of that propertie has been sold.

I think there is talk of moving the highbury facilities to what is left of Woosley Barracks, but that talk may have died a while ago.

Ottawa announced a few weeks ago that the highbury complex was to be closed and sold off, while constructing and rennovating new facilities at Worlesly barracks... perhaps with the new white paper we'll find out if a battalion will come back to London but I highly doubt it...

Thanks guys, I appreciate it...Nice to know that information to.. :cdn:

Hello, I am Ex 1RCR and currently live in London. Where the shacks used to be is now sold off and a grocery store. The Highbury complex is going to be closed and the units moved up to the Wolsley barracks site. So there is definitely no room to move a battalion back into the area. Plus there is no close area for field training.
Cheers

the rcr's are still there.
it's just 4 RCR now  ::)
man I swear I'd do 30 years in the infantry if 1 RCR ever got back down there.
but alas, it will never happen again.

jranrose hit the nail on the head. It's not very likely to ever happen.
Former 1 & 4 RCR & live just outside of London.

As a former member of 1 RCR posted in London I an honestly say that London was not the best place to be posted as a member of the Reg. force. Sure the night life was great when there, but the problem   was you were hardly ever there. A simple few days at the range for those in Petawawa and back to the base for the night, meant a week in Ipperwash, Meaford, Borden, Cedar Springs or Petawawa. On most courses you were off base also. Also nowhere for exercises in London so gone again. It was also a killer on the married members do to the constant absences.

Best Wishes

Ps: There were very good times when in London though.

We (4RCR S Coy) had to move our weapons lockup and QM because Clothing Stores (currently at Highbury) is moving in.
RCRHQ is also still in London at Wolseley Barracks (note the spelling).
