Height (to determine which unit your require) [A1M is 7' L, A2M is 8'4" L]

We have a total of 06 units available for the Beta, 3 in Desert Pattern, 3 in Woodland pattern. A1M and A2M. Complete. Units will be shipped to selected participants at our expense. Each time you use a unit you will be required to submit a Data Response Form to us. As long as you do so, you will maintain the unit.

Our goal is to bring our products to the attention of the powers that be (purchasing) for both US and Canadian military based upon the merits of the product. We tried going in the front door, now we're trying the back. Canadian problem - not enough people at DL 5-4 to run a Beta project. US problem - Berry Amendment. Your assistance would be most deeply appreciated.

Sincerely,

That looks like an awesome product. What is your projected price?

UPDATE:::  "Few Good Men Beta" becomes Beta & Try-Before-You Buy Program.

13:46 - 27 FEBRUARY 2006

Given the larger than anticipated response to our request for personnel wishing to participate in the Beta program, we've decided to add a second program open to all active duty and reserve, militia and guard members as well as to others whom have responded to the request.

We will still conduct the Beta test on the six units. The Beta program is a two-year program that will require the participants to submit at least one Data Response Form (DRF) per month for two years. Upon completion of the Beta, the product will be yours to keep and a certificate proving it will be issued in your name.

The Try-Before-You-Buy program, in a nutshell, is a 30-day evaluation period. Try it out. Like it, Buy it. Don't like it, ship it back. Simple.
Prepayment is required, but said payment will not be processed until you tell us whether you are buying or not. If not, payment process will not be done and your voided cheque or cc information will be returned to you.Additional information will be in the pdf.

A pdf application form and a powerpoint presentation covering the A1M and A2M in detail will be placed upon our web site no later than next Monday (06 MAR 06) and a link to the page will be placed in this posting that will take you directly to it. Both the pdf and powerpoint presentation will be downloadable. As well, an email will be sent out to all of those whom have queried us about the A1M and A2M.

Now, pricing.

The A1M has a direct (suggested) sale price of CAD$1,004.86 and USD$874.43  however ....
for the duration of the TBYB program the price for the A1M will be CAD$879.25 and USD$765.13

The A2M has a direct (suggested) sale price of CAD$1,087.84 and USD$946.64 however ....
for the duration of the TBYB program the price for the A2M will be CAD$951.86 and USD$828.31

Expensive, yes. What does that get you?

A1M or A2M shelter. Fully enclosable, tri-vented (port and starboard side vents plus a formable covered outer door vent), removable doors, (360') thermal reflective, 100 windproof, 100 waterprooof, moisture vapour breathable with a 60 durometer neoprene air tube (60 durometer means the wall thickness is double that of a butyl tube making it near puncture proof). The tube, like the doors can be zipped out. Exterior fabric is ECWCS Taslite. All zips are #5 YKK Coil with either reversible or double pulls. They're gated, so they work just like a jacket zipper - so in the winter you can zip out and store the inner mesh door (made out of IRF Inherent Polyester Mesh - it won't burn, or worse, melt).

StuffSack. Actually, it's a dual compression sack. Folding and rolling the A1 or A2M is easy. Insert it into the StuffSack, add in the PanelAccessory draw down to compress length, and pull out to reduce girth. Like the A1 and A2M, the StuffSack is fully seam taped. If you need to, you can turn it inside out and use it to carry a few litres of water. Thew StuffSack also has an inside flap pocket for whatever you want to place in there. Comes with dual format carry strap.

PanelAccessory. A fold out snap out panel designed for the Crank Brothers dual action manual pump, the Genuine Innovations C02 injector, three 12 or 16 gram C02 cartridges, the breather tube, the fabric repair kit and the tube deflator/valve extractor tool and the user manual. Room left over for items you wish to add - WO Del Badiuk with the 407th THS in Edmonton has been beta testing an A1M since last spring and finds the PA extra space perfect for his shaving gear.

A1M AttachPack (now you know why we call the Accessory Panel the PanelAccessory - AP, PA) We're working on one for the A2M. The AP is a collasible, expandable vaccuum pack that allows you to store an A1M with a P10 bag inside and attach it to your crew or tactical vest. When compressed, the pack has a thickness of no more 2.5 inches. When expanded it is 6 inches deep and comes with convertable harness straps, multiple attachment points (every body seems to have a slightly different vest these days) carry strap and carry handle.

Synthetic Group. Consisting of the P30 blanket (similar to the Ranger blanket, but bigger), P10 sleeping bag and M20 sleeping bag. P30, P10 and M20 are Celsius temperature ratings. All are lined with 3M Thinsulate G, 100 gram, 150 gram, and 200 gram respectively. The P10 alone will keep you and the interior of your sleep system warm to -20C. Outer fabric is Linebacker Nylon, Inner is Worldclass polyester.

At no time, when using this product, should you ever have to wear your arctic clothing to maintain body warmth and sleep at least 8 hours. Using one bag or the blanket under the bag you wish to sleep in will negate the need for a mattress.

A1M, A2M, SS, PA and AP are stitched with Polyfast Layflat Monocord. 24lb burst strength.

Weight. The A1M weighs less than 7 pounds. The A2M less than 10 pounds.

Current color availability US Woodland and US Desert patterns. We're working to get them in CADPAT but will need DoD approval first. We can also do OD Green, Tan, Midnight and Optic (it's white, sort'a) but will need an order of no less than 50 units to do so.

Best Regards,

That looks pretty interesting.  My only question is why such a high price tag?  A family sized tent goes for 1/10th of the price.

I'm sure you want to pack a family sized tent around on your vest, as well as the insulated sleep system, plus all the other high tech percs that come with Stephen's system.

Shake your head, why do you think it costs that much? Quality and innovation come at a price.

To answer lostwarrior's query:

"That looks pretty interesting.  My only question is why such a high price tag?  A family sized tent goes for 1/10th of the price."

1/ A family-sized tent will not protect you alone in subzero temperatures and with just a -20 Celsius rated Synthetic sleeping bag.

2/ A family-sized tent is a double wall tent. The A1M and A2M are single walled. Also, read this:

Traditional "double-wall" tents consist of a canopy covered by a rainfly. Most single-wall shelters feature just one fabric layer, usually a waterproof/breathable laminate. Top-of-the-line single walls are among the highest quality and most expensive tents available. Since they're light, compact, and easily pitched compared to double-wall models, these tents are the shelters of choice on mountaineering expeditions where wind and snowstorms are fierce. Good vents are essential on single-walls because they are prone to heavy condensation. The best single-wall tents are seam-taped; those that aren't require zealous sealing and maintenance.  Source: Annette McGivney, Southwest Editor, Backpacker Magazine, March 2002 Gear Guide Issue.

We seam tape ours with the best tape available. We sew them with a specific machine: A Brother DB2-B722 Single Needle Feed, Feed Lock Stitcher with Thread Trimmer. New, these sewing machines cost $4,300 CAD before tax. The end result though, is a product that works and is made to last because we designed to exceed MILSPEC with Mountaineering Standards in mind. The only thing we don't offer is the tent peg because nothing good enough out there and we're designing one for multiple applications.

We as much as anyone else hate it when we're trying to pound in a tent peg and it decides to do a Banana imitation. Plus there are places on this rock where no matter how hard you hit it, the peg ain't sinking. So, we hope to have a combination grapple-peg (one that won't have the same price as a Testarossa) out by the Fall - and if you already own a unit, we'll send it to you free.

3/ A family sized tent will not compress down to an over sized loaf of bread (A1M) or an oversized football (A2M).

4/ A family-sized tent is NOT IR Refractive.

5/ A family-sized tent is not light block capable (interior out).

6/ A family sized tent will produce an IR fog.

7/ A family sized tent will create interior condensation. At most, an A2M will produce condensation at the upper arch.

8/ A family-sized tent has a tub floor - if you put something wet inside, sooner or later it is going to join you in your sleeping bag.

9/ The interior of a family-sized tent will be as cold as the outside in the morning whether you are in it alone or with the family.

10/ A family-sized tent with a ranger blanket will not prevent hypothermia.

11/ A family-sized tent will not fit into a Stokes Litter for Med-Evac.

12/ A family-sized tent will show up on a thermal image.

13/ A family-sized tent cannot be set-up in 1.8 seconds.

14/ If there's a problem with your family-sized tent after the first year, will the manufacturer "take care" of you? Or for that matter, is your family-sized tent guaranteed for 5 years?

There's more, but I think you'll be getting the picture at this point.

Awesome reply, Stephen. IMHO that list should go up on your website, it offers quite a bit of valuable information for those of us (myself included, until I read that post) that don't understand what makes your product that much better.

As a side note, I must say that I love the way the shelter sets up with a C02 canister, I've never seen anything like that. Keep up the good work.

Cheers,
Pinky

Thank you for the compliment - up until now, we've been quite guarded with the information and that is about to change. What most will need to realize is that there's a ton of information about the product and we don't want to put people to sleep reading it, but we do wish to educate. The more informed you are, the better you'll be able to use it.

We'll soon (end of March) be posting a new web site to coincide with our name change (from PAC RES GRU to GruntWorkx R&D), with more detailed information and better photographs along with the downloadable pdf and powerpoint files. We're also planning some viewable and downloadable video footage to help people understand how to operate the dual action pump and use the valve tool.

I failed to mention in my last response that if you want to, you can use a closed cell or self-inflating mattress with the unit and that it works best when placed underneath the floor. This allows for complete barrier to cold spotting and root/rock projections while allowing the floor to breathe and reflect body heat.

/SJ

Latest from Pinky (and yes, I'm learning how to use this site as I go - would appreciate knowing how to do that nifty inline quotation):

Stephen, PM coming your way.

Thank you for the Heads Up. Now, to determine how to do this without getting shot.....
