Looking to Buy 80 Lbs test cord

HA HA HA HA too funny. Go to the Airborne school and ask a P.I. really, really nice. They have tons of the stuff. You might end up doing "adopt the push up position on your helmet, GO!!", but what the heck. If they invite you into the "Thunder Dome", go. It's lots of fun too. Or join a para coy. They have lots as well. Seriously though, what on earth would you want 80lbs test for?

what do you mean

I wear glasses and someone else mentioned that you could get this cord that holds up to 80 lbs. I'm just wondering where you could get it?

I would hazard a guess that it's actually more than 80 lbs, you can hang from it and not break it. I've always heard it called paracord or 550 cord, meaning 550 lbs test. 80 isn't that much.

As for where to get it, check with the CQMS or SQMS or whatever your unit calls it, they have rolls of the stuff.

Cheers

Sorry guys, you are way off on this one. Perhaps I ought to have explained further. 80lbs test is just that, it breaks after 80lbs for a REASON and there is no way in hell you can hang off of it. You are confusing this with 550 cord / para cord, they are different things. 80lbs test is a thin cord that resembles something like a thin shoe string, it is used to rig equipment/weapons for jumping and it is also used in the actual deployment of the parachute ( i.e. the deployment bag is secured by 80lbs test, so that when you jump out it breaks, releasing the canopy...) if it were strong enough to hang off of then you would be hung up and doing "rivet checks" as you smashed off the side of the plane. When you are on your para course there will be tonnes of the stuff, it is provided for you to rig with, jumpers use it tie off anything that may come loose while jumping ( like glasses, rifle scopes, etc ) while making it easy enough to break off once on the DZ. Copy? As far as buying up a bunch of it, I wouldn't bother, I can't imagine it would be useful for anything outside of jumping. Lastly, good luck and keep those fires burning boys, the Airborne can always use new motivated troops!

Gotcha, I know the stuff you're talking about. I thought you were talking about 550 cord at first, my bad.

yeah I guess I was missinformed I guess I meant 550 chord. Can u get that at an Army Surplus store?

Yes I know you can get it in Kingston. I actually found the most amazing Military Surplus store in that city. However I suppose it would be expected on account of the fact that it has CFB Kingston and RMC there.
Regards,

You can usually get 550 cord at almost any Surplus store, but why buy it when your QM will give it out for free? Have you tried asking for it or AD REP for it through your Sect. 2ic?

I know that there is a surplus store in Smith Falls and I guess I'll check and see if they have it. Thankx boys :salute:

Actually it's in the metropolis of Jasper on County Rd 15

Hey Bruce have you been there yet? I haven't I've only heard about it what is it like?

Are we still talking about Basic Para here? Or should we switch to the Equipment thread maybe?
