Maritime Coastal Defence Vessels (MCDVs)

8 MCDVs to be paid off this fall. Apparently an expansion of the Orca fleet will replace them. Interesting that there isn't a mention of any potential corvettes to replace them.

The breakdown of where the remaining ships will be berthed makes me wonder if 4 of AOPS’s will head to the WC and the remaining 2 will stay in Halifax.

Suddenly pushing 3/4 of the fleet into a paid off status and retiring the remaining four on a yearly basis out to 2028 seems like a very fast timeline. I am quite worried that this will end up with the RCN running AOPS into the ground, especially as the Continental Defence Corvette program isn't officially funded or really exists with any kind of reasonable timeline for delivery.

We live in a country that believes we need 15 major combatant vessels for longest coast line in the world and three oceans.

Canadians don't live in reality.

In reality, it really is only 5 ships, 5 major combatants, that would be able to answer the call if needed.

These 1,300 individuals are responsible, from a maritime perspective, in keeping the other 41 million Canadians from harms way.

Considering they just stood down Sea Training Pacific Patrol on the readiness side of things probably not.

3 or 4 Kingston Class have been tied up for years on the WC due to lack of crews. They even stopped refitting them which bit us in the ass. Yes AOPS will be run into the ground due to their extensive maintenance requirements. More of an effort should of kept a few more running or at least alongside as a training platform.

Also delayed and finally cancelled the MCDV equipment refresh; that would have been the time to tackle things like replacing the DAs, getting rid of the dissimilar metal piping on the firemain, and general equipment upgrades needed to bring it up to basic SOLAS on the marine systems side.

Took forever to actually get the fine water spray fitted in the machinery rooms, and that was a basic SOLAS thing. Not even sure it was fully installed or STW on the class before some started to get mothballed.

Interesting to see what they do with the Orcas; the design has some known issues with mold due to the design and a few other issues, but with the age of the design should also do a SOLAS code update to it, while doing some basic obsolescence updates. It's almost a 20 year old design at this point.

Hopefully no one starts to think they are combatants; they are strictly built for training with a max complement of 20ish people, and only really intended for an overnight or two, but that's perfect for doing basic NETP type things.

They were all installed although one of the recent ships that transited from the EC from the WC did so with a system not working as it should. The thing that pissed me off the most was we refitted one operated it for a year and tied it up because a small piece of plate was overly wasted on the hull that should of been identified during its docking. They could of docked it again for a pittance but decided to pay it off, we could of had that ship fully operational for 5 years.

Not quite what the press release states: Their training duties will be taken over by an expanded Orca fleet. Their other duties will be farmed out to other units and assets, such as the AOPS taking over counter-narcotics duties, or Fleet Diving Units taking over mine warfare, using any of the other fleet assets and remotely controlled systems, and other incoming platforms (i.e. RCD and CMC, I guess, but could also include P-8A Poseidon for some tasks).

That's really just fluff as all NWO courses have been done by the ORCAS for many years now anyways. Getting BWK tickets will suffer but AOPS and other platforms will take that over. They're trying real hard to say that there won't be a capability gap, there will be some.

Not to mention there is no current proposal for new Orca's 2.0 as far as I am aware of?

Elbows Up sub-class of Orca are hinge warships that will transform the way Canada is viewed in a pan domain multi asymmetric regionally distributed Tri Polar world interest rates housing we’re in a crisis manner that respects indigenous climate change consensus.
Nobody frigs with Canada.

At least the inside passage is protected......

Orcas had a significant corrective maintenance (wouldn't call it a midlife) around 2021, when Topshee was Commander Maritime Forces Pacific. There were significant deficiencies from an inspection found with various systems, most of them safety related. Topshee grounded the entire fleet until it was overhauled and/or sorted out. Took a year or so to fix.

I don't know the details just watercooler info.
