Hi i'm making a project on military music a school (history, practice... etc) i'm planning on interviewing a few people from the band at my cadet corp but apart from that i am dry on ideas or knowledge...

If anybody has ideas or knowledge please feel free to share.

cheers.

You can PM me for specific questions - I was a reserve musician for a few years - still volunteer with a reserve band since I transfered to the regular force (didn't transfer as a musician). Also did the cadet music thing just over 10 years ago for 4 summers (course/staff).

There is an FAQ section at the DHH page for CF Bands - http://www.forces.gc.ca/hr/dhh/engraph/faqs_e.asp?category=music

Pretty broad topic - I would try to narrow it down if I was in a similar situation. How different nations have employed it ? Native vs. adopted tradition? Certainly music has a marshalling aspect to it. Bagpipes were considered an instrument of war by some Sassenachs.

ok more specifically canadian military music, tradition and protocol it there is some.

i'm doing the project at school so in front of civilians, i am simply puzzled because i don't know how to make a structured presentation and not confuse my audience i am also having trouble to find a way to simplify matters for them.

That's still a fairly large area of topic.  Do you want to do an historical overview of the use of bands - peace time, conflict? What type of band? Marching bands, Pipe band? Concert Bands? Fanfare teams? Buglers? Dance bands? Do you want to write about a particular element's band? Army, Navy Airforce? The politics of downsizing bands in the CF? etc etc etc I think you need to do a bit more planning and using Google before you claim to have hit a wall for ideas.

Actually what i need to do is do a recap of military music IN GENERAL so civilians can get the general idea.

Chawki,

Have a look at this site  http://www.worldmilitarybands.com/  You should find something there that will help you. I haven't looked at it in a long time, but I think there is a section about Canadian bands in it. It is a Canadian Site.

All the best    Drummy

To save starting a new thread I'll post this question here

Is there anyone who can help with identifying composers of the various regimental marches of the Canadian Forces. I am aware of the various listings of these marches such that at the Ducimus site but I have not seen any listing that includes composers. Granted some of them are probably properly credited as anonymous or traditional but I'm sure some of them have identifiable composers.

Thanks all

Why not focus on some of the regimental tunes maybe the regiments in your locale ?

PM me with those marches you need.  I have 99% of them at home.
