Minister Anand announces $1.4 billion investment to upgrade Dwyer Hill Training Centre infrastructure

No I just work in Ottawa, but live out of the city but thanks for asking.

Since the early 2000s there has been talk of the JT3 group moving somewhere.

Trenton, was considered because of the access to the aircraft and runway.
Land was purchased, farmer evicted.
Other units were also being moved to Trenton for quicker operational needs.
Canadian Joint Incident Response Unit (CJIRU) was moved from Kingston to Trenton

Wonder how long before the money is spent on studies.

Interested to know your insight in the local complaints then about noise surrounding DHTC, since many have noted that the days of high aircraft activity in the vicinity of DHTC have passed and other locations service to support air activities. 🤔

I read more than the average bear. ( helps I work in a place that prints newspapers, kills the boredom, I do not write the stories or create them just work in the building) and retain the information.

I find that it is amazing that people move near a busy set of train tracks, or move close to a highway, or near an airport and the first thing they do is complain about the noise. My question is always, was the train tracks there before they moved ( not many new right of ways being made or planned or operational outside of the GO train work in the GTA), even fewer new airports being built or even planned. Highways well they are always doing something to extend or build a new one just not in the Ottawa Valley. So those people had to know ahead of their planned purchase there was noise issue. Do not wake up one morning and presto there is a train yard in your backyard.

A lot of people cannot tell the difference between the Bell 412, the Chinook, the porter turbo prop that flies over on its way to the airport, or the air ambulance helicopter. They see a sign that says Army base in whatever official wording the signage and right away it has to be a military helicopter that makes the noise.

I read a lot about the JTF-2 because there is very little official word and press releases on their work, it is interesting to see what is being said about it in public and compare it to what is written on the SAS, SEALs, Delta, and other special forces teams. Get an idea what they do and how they might operate. Books on the unit are rare, and first hand accounts are even more rare. So anything written on them or about them becomes word porn almost. I like to think I keep fairly current on my current events in the area I live.

There is still at least one chinook, or Bell 412 flight I see or hear over my office area almost weekly, hear helicopter and I must look up. I hear a train horn, I must look. That helicopter is to blame for all helicopter noise in the Ottawa Valley.

There is no better sound than being in Algonquin Park paddling near the Barron Canyon than to hear the sound of helicopter echoing over the canyon. Light show at night. Consider it a private air show over the Petawawa River.

Uplands is near a high traffic area. Dwyer Hill is far enough yet close enough to avoid the issues that comes with that.

I live just next to the Ottawa river in Cbay. There are lots of overflights by both CH146, and CH147.

There are also a ton of overflights by ORNGE.

Reason being, is that the Ottawa River is an easy landmark for both TOH, and the Civic. As well as CAF flights transiting to PET.

Still has zero impact on the neighbors near DHTC.

There was a large land purchase in Trenton with the intention of moving JTF2 there, alongside CJIRU- and CSOR was staying in pet at the time.

There was a farmer who fought it hard- I’m not sure why they needed his land but it was the fly in the ointment, there was even signage to the effect of the new CANSOFCOM home.

There was never a set of boots in a locker- it was all good idea fairies- but it was expensive and it did happen. But it was never on any practical radar for the boys. It never made it past the google maps stage.

Some of it is in here:

Yup. The RCAF flew F-86 Sabers out of Downsview…

There will always be people complaining about things that inconvenience them.

As a young Sqn duty officer I received a noise complaint from a citizen in Ottawa who was adamant it was the military. I took down all the details and researched the complaint. Turn out it was the Ornge medevac helicopter landing at the Civic hospital’s landing pad. Want to know what made the complaint even more ridiculous? The complainant was an MD with a home-based practice one block from the Civic hospital. He wasn’t thrilled when he received a Cc: copy of the letter I sent the Ontario Ministry of health on his behalf complaining about the noise created by Ontario’s air ambulance program. (My CO took me off the duty officer roster…perhaps he didn’t appreciate my initiative to stop noise 🤷🏻‍♂️)

Anyway, the whole point is that DND honestly does it’s best not to be jerk to folks in the surrounding area, and not just at DHtC but other places DND has a footprint, but at some point you can’t keep everyone happy. I choose to celebrate the sound of CH-146s or CH-147Fs flying over my backyard. At least they’re not black and spying on me.

I am an Aviation Squirrel whenever a Cyclone or the Coast Guards Helos fly over my house. Being a couple Kms from Shearwater for most of life has conditioned me in a healthy little kid like way.

My dad took my brother and me as small kids to watch planes land at YYZ…there was a burger place on Derry Rd. almost right in front of the touchdown to RWY 15L…DC8s, 10s, 707s, 727s, 747s…pre Airbus. Stayed with me.

It's still there.

With all this airplane talk, I guess they're getting a runway for the $1.4B?

They don't need no stinking' runways!

If they shutdown 17 Wing tomorrow, that wouldn’t put a dent in the amount of air traffic over the city. I don’t mind the Hercs and odd CF-18 or Griffon overhead. It’s a free air show with the sound of freedom. :)
One day I was mowing my lawn in the North Side PMQ patch and this aircraft could be heard over the lawn mower. A C5 Galaxy made its presence known.
