MONTREAL - A woman got a rude awakening when she groggily felt around under her bed to find the source of a noise and touched an almost metre-long snake.

The 31-year-old woman had been drifting off to sleep and heard the noises around midnight Sunday.

The woman jumped and shone a flashlight under the bed to confirm her find before calling 911, Montreal police said.

The snake - a non-venomous python - tried to escape through a hole in a nearby wall when police arrived but one officer managed to grab it by its tail and hold on to it.

The officers managed to get the snake into a plastic container and put a lid over it before taking it to the district police station. It was later turned over to an animal shelter.

No one was hurt.

The reptile apparently belongs to one of the people living in the apartment building but police said the owner had not been located yet.

Ok so I'm going to shine my extensive personal experience on this.  :P

My step-dad breeds Ball Pythons for a living, he's the biggest breeder in Canada right now but a lot of his product goes to Europe and Western Canada.  We have about 400 pythons in our house is a room, each in a long tupperware container slid into wooden heating racks.  We have had a snake get loose once.  There is no excuse for these animals getting out, none.  This only happens when people buy them with no knowledge on their care and capabilities.  Its a shame because snakes and other reptiles almost never get adopted from these shelters.  People just associate animal shelters with fuzzy abused kittens and puppies, plus you can't take a python for a walk.

Anyways, I hope they track the owner down and slap a fine on him.  I bet if they searched his apartment they would find that the snake was not in a proper tank or enclosure.  Most of the time people just keep them in spare closets.

Cheers, Kyle

Happy members and most respected guests,

Lucky she was not here, or she could have been killed with the local ones around my place.

Pythons are common too here, but things poisionus are more common.

Happy days,

OWDU
