IMHO, there's a huge difference between the likes of Conan & Letterman and the news.  One is entertainment, just not sure which one.

Well, admittedly, Conan & Letterman are only meant to be entertainment and many news items end up in there (usually as a joke) but yes, the news (and the rest of the media) seems to be driven by the entertainment motive.
