Back in the day, being made a "Serving Brother" (that should indicate the era I speak of) was an almost automatic award for the individuals who worked "DND Special Centre for First Aid" which in my day in SurgGen branch was in Director Medical Operations and Training (DMOT). Though they had other duties, the "Special Centre" was a Captain HCA and (IIRC) a WO Med A. The two HCAs that had the job during my time were both nominated at the end of their tenure. I recall that there had been a reorganization of first aid training during those years (but when has there not been continuous restructuring of FA trg in the CF) so there were probably adequate "accomplishments" to highlight in the nominations.

I have always kind of wondered what some of the people that the CAF nominated with no other service to St John Ambulance did to be accepted into the Order when civilian side the number of people accepted each years seems to be getting smaller. The CAF won't be nominating anyone for the next couple of years before they finally realize how inadequate the Red Course course is and switch back to St John Ambulance.
