At the very least, it might draw enough attention for the public to start asking questions, which in turn will crank up the heat on our politicians, who will in turn start looking for excuses ::)..er I mean looking for ways to speed up the replacement process. Sorry, I let the sarcasm come through there....

 
This all reminds me of when that Russian freighter took off with our Battle Group....
 
If I might add a couple of points.

First, about the "leakiness" of the Sea King.   Most of the technology on it is 40 years old (NOT the actual parts) and thus was built to a much less stringent set of tolerances.   Thus, the helicopter was always more or less leaked fluids from day 1.   I myself start to ask questions when I see a completely dry helo after it has been flying a few hours.   After you crew a Sea King for a while, you learn what is "normal" and what most is not.   As for the journalists being freaked out by the pax briefing- the TACCO and AESOP can't always be in the back of the helo with the passengers.   It always made good sense to me to tell the passengers what to look for and to speak up if they see something unusual.   I have had passengers notice leaks first before and we dealt with it- no big deal.

As for using civvy helicopters for administrative flights to support the fleet- I do not know the specifics of how Cmdre Pile intended on using them during the Ex in question, other than what the news article said.   However, nothing p&$%@d me off more than being sent into San Diego or Hawaii, or where ever to pick up pax or stores in the middle of an EX and subsequently miss a good warfighting serial (sub time is precious!).   Managed properly, this keeps the Sea King flight hours for training and not for admin.

As for the double-hulled tanker debate- it is my understanding that we follow civvy rules on this stuff where possible.   On the West Coast especially, it would be a public relations disaster of the highest order to have our single hulled AOR, HMCS PROTECTEUR, split her hull and have a major spill.   It just makes good sense to have two hulls.
