New tags for symbolism die hard, despite whatever history they may have or how far back they date.
If there is a negative connotation that is more recent, unfortunately that is all anyone ever remembers.
Much like the Confederate flag, though once having historical meaning in the US, now is mostly associated with rednecks and racists. This does not mean that the historical meaning of the symbol is completely lost, but that most everybody gets all up in arms and thinks of the latest bad thing it stood for.
I'm sure soon Al Quaida will adopt the Star Trek symbol and that too will have such a negative meaning that Trekkies everywhere will be forever in fear of showing their loyalties to the Federation. :
India and China use the symbol in the traditional way, they never stopped really. That is a few billion people who have already reclaimed this symbol. Hitler is not particularly significant compared to 5000 years of history. Especially when you see it every time you look at the stars.(Polaris and Big Dipper)
Offensive to who? Bleeding hearts looking to get offended by something? I looked at the satellite imagery on my block and my house and the houses surrounding it look look like Osama Bin Laden, should we demolish my house :
Get a grip man.
