I read the article you provided and only saw references to the RCMP and USCG. I did not see any references to the RCN or USN.

You're right. I guess my point was that a joint US/CDN constabulary program already exists. I'm not convinced plugging either navy into that is necessary.

We had those on very rare occasions but nothing major at all. Again prevailing winds are NW'rly and south winds not generally very strong. Usually when you had the strongest winds they came from the west or southwest which paralleled our shoreline.

They can get very big depending on how long the winds last.

Even on Lake Ontario the only ship in mid lake is the Isabelle G. You don't see them hauled up like that very often.

There's a lot of wind down here right now. I use Ventusky as my weather map and it had been showing the wind driving straight along from one end of Lake Erie to the other at 80kph gusting to 100 but dying down overnight.

All joking aside, it would have to be berthed in Lake Winnipeg. There would be few options for periodic maintenance. The operating window would be Jun-Oct, which is shorter than on the great lakes. Travel and TD for any permanent crew would be excessive. Gimli looks close, but it's not. It would be better if CHW were equipped with a top notch bridge simulator which could be used for NRETS. There is enough real estate in the building for it to stand in for the rest of the ship. There is also an MDTU which could be used for MarTech training.

Could we securely store a boat there the size of an Orca ?

HMCS CATARAQUI right beside the front gates of CFB Kingston and HMCS MONTCALM, which is the location of the Naval Reserve Command in Quebec City are the two locations being considered as the Operating Bases. CFB Valcatrez (Valcartier) and CFB Kingston both have numerous barracks for Sailors, and can build more. The Canadian Coast Guard operating already on the Great Lakes, now a Department of National Defence Asset, has very large operations to work on ships for routine maintenance and VLE or Vessel Life Extension Programs. It's already a GO.

Kingston does not have extra barracks lying around unless its during the summer months at RMC. Putting even 100 transients onto the base would overload the crumbling infrastructure. RCN better come up with a plan pretty quick if they're assuming that base has space for them. CATARAQUI's jetty is also currently trapped behind a bridge that only opens twice a year.

No. And contrary to popular belief, lake Winnipeg, while large, is very shallow and with large swaths not very navigable by ships with a good draft. Ask the Coast Guard rescue unit there and they'll tell you.

On lake Ontario, the best place is Hamilton. HMCS STAR is located at what used to be the RCN's (pre-unification) Great Lakes Training Center. Good berthing facilities and lots of room to build a residence or something akin to it, especially if the RCN kicks out the Army that "invaded" the place after unification. You could also build a shore training facility equal to the one in Quebec City and instantly double the simulators/ops room training facilities available to East Coast reserve units.

Isn't Haida birthed there ? Does that 1960s infrastructure still exist and is it maintained ?

Never been to Star, but I know it was a hub for preunification RCNR.

Haida is berthed just outside the base, as it has to be accessible to the public as a National Park. Last I saw them (about ten years ago) the facilities inside the base were quite sufficient to berth the RHIbs and four Orca's (two per berth). They probably need upgrading for electrical, steam (do the Orca's need steam connection?) and communication, but it shouldn't be that hard to do.
