Nope: The Hero class is a variant of the Sentinel class, much smaller. They screwed it up. For more info, I am sure you can PM Colin Parkinson, who probably has more low-down on them than I do.

Disregarding the trainee bit for a moment ...

Who screwed what up?

Damen Stan Patrol 4207

Netherlands - 2
UK - 4
Jamaica - 3
Nicaragua - 2
Barbados - 3
Albania - 4
Bulgaria - 1
Canada - 9
Mexico - 10
Bahamas - 4
Venezuela - 2
Honduras - 2
Vietnam - 7

Damen Stan Patrol 4708

South Africa - 3
United States - 56

Was it the wrong boat for Canadian waters? Was their a spec problem? Or was their a construction problem?

Just curious if we turned this into a sea-going version of the LSVW. A design that was satisfactory everywhere but Canada.

You weren't.

No, the original Hero-class patrol vessels (also known as the Mid-Shore Patrol Vessels) were not originally equipped with stabilizers. However, the Canadian Coast Guard later considered and is potentially looking at installing them.

Here's a more detailed explanation:
  • Initial Design:
The Hero-class vessels, built by Irving Shipbuilding between 2011 and 2014, were based on the Dutch Damen Stan 4207 patrol vessel design.

  • Lack of Stabilizers:
The federal government initially opted against equipping these vessels with stabilizers, leading to reports of excessive rolling in rough seas.

  • Later Assessment:
The Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) has since assessed the need for stabilizers on these vessels, and is considering installing them.

  • Current Status:
The Hero-class vessels are still in service with the Canadian Coast Guard, and the decision on whether to install stabilizers is still ongoing.

  • New Arctic and Offshore Patrol Ships (AOPV):
The newer Harry DeWolf class ships, which are Arctic and Offshore Patrol Vessels (AOPV), are equipped with active fin stabilizers.

Edit - I'm sure fixing the galley is going to make them all better, don't worry about that little boo-boo.

A fine CCG tradition

Taken a proven design, shorten it and add a deck.

Put it in the water and go oh crap the Naval Architect was right!

Add flume tank- Check
Cut as much topside weight as possible -check
Add longer bilge keels - check
Add active rudder system - check

Making the vessel bearably for the crew underway. She is actually quite comfy at anchor and liked for that.

The Naval Architect never again wanted to work with the CCG on another vessel.

Also my vessels the R Class also rolling their guts out

Would the USCG Webber class be a better STAN option for Canada? Longer and Wider than ours and the Yanks seem to send them everywhere.

Do you actually want trainees driving around at 28 Kts?

Not to mention the engineering requirements for a ship with such powerful engines.
I was thinking they'd go to the Coast Guard and RCMP, and another version, maybe with less powerful engines, would be the training vessel.

I would expect a new order would address that kind of sheer dumbassery, if possible, or is that a standard thing on all Damen patrol vessels?
I understood this wasn’t about providing the Coast Guard with what they required but about keeping the lights on at Irving for the least expenditure. This was the beginning of NSS or NSPS. At that point in time Irving had little maintenance activity and hadn’t built anything since the Kingstons many moons before that. I expect that their skills base was on the verge of disappearing.

This is the Seaspan press release for the awarding of the Polar Class Icebreaker, gleam from it what you will, they are claiming they are going to build 21 Icebreakers for the CCG, my guess is the PR person likley included the 4 non-icebreakers for the CCG they have already built.
