Thanks for the link. I guess that kicking off their forum with a 7700 word introductory post and also requiring posts to be submitted for review is really trying to pull in the casual participant.

At first glance it appears to be a forum dedicated to the POV of Commanders and above. Lesser lights need not post. I hope I am wrong though.

Canadian Naval Review isn't quite at the level of a perr-reviewed academic journal, but it's easily a professional one.

That hits the nail sarcastically, but squarely on the head.

I spoke today with the gent who put this together.  They're trying to create more of a participative online tool - something that complements the CNR, but doesn't duplicate it, in a less formal way.  I think this sort of thing is actually tough for academics, who are used to putting out an idea only once they've thought it through completely and can support it with exhaustive research.  I'm not sure they're quite clear on how to go about the project, but I'm hoping the board that controls the publication can agree to make it more casual.

The Cdn military community doesn't need yet another academic outlet, it needs a place to interact with the public and with each other more freely than is possible in a sanctioned, official site.  The Navy needs its own Army.ca.

Personally, I don't think there could ever be another site like army.ca.  This site keeps building, and it is great to intermingle with members of all elements and components, and also the civilian community.  Sailors have always (typically ;)) been welcome here (amidst the digs, of course!), and even have their own sub-board to post in.  I really don't see how the creation of a navy.ca board could replicate what Mike has going on here.

I agree, as a sailor I come here to learn from beyond the physical and intellectual constraints of the Dockyard.

I like to see whats going on in other trades and elements.

I also like the digs.

Well of course being the Senior Service we have to expect jealousy and therefore we must endure the outrageous digs!!! ;D

It's funny to see them say such things, because we know it all just comes down to jealousy, and they want to hide their extreme admiration for us so they can up keep their tough image. We all know that every soldier deep down inside would just love to be a sailor. ;D

So if I was part of the Senior service, and now I'm part of the junior, does that average out to make me.....army?!?!  :o

Simmer down now.  Get a little salt on those shoulder boards before you go tossing stones.
Well said, good advise for the young lad.
