Premier Rodney MacDonald announced a new portfolio Monday that he said would recognize Nova Scotia's long-standing relationship with Canada's military.

Justice Minister Murray Scott will assume responsibilities for Military Relations.

MacDonald said the new position will serve as a direct link to both the Defence Department and military personnel in the province.

The premier said he believes it's important to try to capitalize on any future economic opportunities that may come through the military.

"I think there's opportunities with the number of contracts that may come forward over the next number of years," he said.

"I'm making sure we present the best case possible for Nova Scotia to take advantage of all of those opportunities."

There are about 14,500 military personnel, reservists and civilian employees in Nova Scotia, generating more than $1 billion each year in salaries, operations and facilities.

MacDonald said it's only right that his province take an active interest in the well being of a community that contributes much to Nova Scotia's economy and social fabric.

"We have many families who are in situations with their loved ones overseas, fighting for our country, fighting for our province," he said.

"If there's ways that we can work with the Department of National Defence to make life a little bit better for those families, I think we have a responsibility to do so."

The minister will oversee the province's Defence Forum, an interdepartmental committee that promotes and supports relationships with the Defence Department and Canadian Forces.

MacDonald said Scott won't get a bump in pay for taking on the extra responsibility.

Confused. The headline doesn't match the story. It would seem that the Justice Minister now has additional responsibilities rather than a new portfolio being created. It does raise some of interesting issues though but don't the issues raised fall under the sphere of intergovernmental relations, a post traditionally assumed by the premier?
