Off Grid Homesteading

Well we did it. We're pulling the trigger, the offer (which as all ready been accepted) goes in today.

Not the 25 acres I actually wanted, but this works for us too. We will use the existing cabin a bunkie while we build the main camp this summer.

As for the space, I have very close access to thousands of acres of crownland. Thats good enough for me! Will post more as the work progresses.

Is the thousand acres close by or someplace completely different?

Also.... does your thousand acres of land have any signs posted that say "no hunting without owner's permission?" :D

I will a have 8+ acres. With a food plot and tree stand already in place.

The sub dived properties are surrounded by 1000s of acres of crown land on the northern side.

We walked to them in about 10 mins. By ATV or truck not enough to warm the engine up.

Ah ok I misunderstood. I feel stupid for having thought you "also owned a 1000 acres of crown land", which doesn't make any sense.

Remember Type 2 Concertina obstacles and an anti zombie ditch….

Heck of a nice pick up. Cabin alone is worth about $10k at auction and you didn't need to move it.

Very jealous of land prices though. While the per acre is similar to me locally smaller parcels tend to be about 3-5x what farmland rates work out to be.

That'd be at least double the cost out west here.

Thanks! We're pretty excited. Now comes all the leg work and admin lol

And then building... Which is fun to me...

@foresterab any experience with compost toilets ?
Unfortunately no. Goon spoon and land mine tape is most of my bush experience.

Told they have significantly improved in recent years but would need to research things to be up to date. We tend to haul the holiday trailer out for overnight trips so haven't had to go down that route yet.

I've been told by the better half the current set up however needs an improvement so guess that's a summer task

After what seems like years of searching I think the missus and I finally found our large acreage to set up our off grid camp/homestead/run away.

Lots of space to hunt and fish and live off what the land provides. And no neighbors.

Would love a repository for group info on this... and I'd love people who have experience with solar and wells.

Anyone else have any experience ?
Congrats on finding the land. No neighbors is the dream. For solar, oversize your battery bank. Cloudy weeks happen. For wells, test the water before you buy. Nothing worse than high iron or sulfur. Ask the neighbors (oh wait, you don't have any). Ask the county instead.

Have you made any connections with the Earthship community? It may be beyond what you're doing but my friends who are in that circle seem to have access to a lot of expertise.

If you are looking specifically at an indoor option, there are pros and cons. The largest drawback is urine is captured separately and needs to be dumped, potentially on a daily basis. Otherwise the composting never works efficiently and ends up becoming a smelly mess.
There are some interesting outdoor options, which include Vermicomposting toilets, often called Tiger Worm Toilets. They do need to be well insulated to last the winters, or the worms need to be replaced annually.
Others have tried incinerating toilets. The results are hit and miss, depending on the company of manufacture and the client service experience. They are also very pricey to purchase, and require propane to run, but when installed correctly, and running as they should, they provide the easiest option for a non-water based solution.

You could probably dig a few seacans into the ground, or a more modest bunker.
