I am thinking of joining but I don't really know to much and I don't want to get stuck doing something I don't want to be in. I want to go into being a vehicle technician but I am curious of how to move up in the rankings. If I'm in the army I hope to be in for long enough to get a pension(20 years?). I am curious to know if there is lots of opportunity to move up in this field.

You can advance in rank in every trade. If you have the courses and time in your be promoted(providing theres an opening for that position/rank), it takes time though.

do we have to take any tests to move up the rank?

There arn't really any "tests," more like just courses that have to be completed, and time in the current rank you are at (aswell as openings mentioned above.)

Depends on what you consider a test.  Courses yes, Cpls and Capts are the working ranks, time in and MOC trg will get you there.  If you want to move up any further you start getting into staff school and the like for pointy heads, and JLC and beyond for NCMs.

Cheers

So for a DEO position, starting at a second Luitenant, how long would it typically take a person to climb to rank of captain?

3 years.  1 as a 2Lt, 2 as an Lt, the catch is that you've got to be MOC qualified.  I think most of the time they retro pay you and backdate your seniority to when you should have been promoted.

Cheers

Ah thanks, But is it different in promotion times between Army and Airforce? I am thinking that a Pilot has to be a captain by the time he is ready to fly, but for an Army Officer it is not nessecary so maybe the promotion times are longer?

Nope, it's the same, if a guy gets his wings before he's eligible for Capt, he's a flying Lt. It hasn't happened often in the last few years due to the pilot training backlog, but now that the backlog has worked it's way through there'll be some winged Lt's showing up on Sqn.

Cheers

Thanks Inch, but that seems strange, is the Pilot not supposed to be the highest rank on the airplane? i.e. Pilot is in command of all on board? or does flight crew position take priority over rank in that situation? (I am thinking that a Air Navigator or some other guy could be a Captain while the Pilot is Leutenant)

In multi crew aircraft, which is pretty much every aircraft in the inventory except the CF-18, you start out as a First Officer (FO, which is always a pilot), I'm not sure about other communities but in MH it takes about 18 months to upgrade to Aircraft Captain (AC, again always a pilot) and 6 more months to upgrade to Crew Commander (CC, can be a pilot or a nav). By the time you upgrade to AC you're already a Capt, and in most cases it's 3 Capts and the AESOp on an MH. The AESOp is an NCM and can be anywhere in rank from Cpl to CWO.   For the 6 months prior to upgrading to CC, it'll be the Nav that's the CC (I'm not sure if the FO can be the CC since everyone upgrades and just because you're qualified AC doesn't mean you'll be acting as AC). The Nav being the CC can cause a bit of a conflict of interest since it's the CC that calls for the torpedo to be dropped (he's responsible for the mission) but the AC is responsible for the aircraft so by default he's also responsible for what ever comes off the aircraft, namely the torpedo.   So it's usually a very short time before you upgrade from AC to CC. If it ever occurred that an AC was a Lt and the FO was a Capt, crew position takes precedence, the ranks on our shoulders are a military thing, they don't have much meaning within an aircrew. CC is the boss, regardless of rank and whether or not he's a pilot. Quite often the CC is a Capt and the Nav in the back is a Maj. As for the jet jocks, an Lt can fly just like a Capt or any other rank as long as he's qualified. These little quirks are probably why the airforce doesn't put much stock in ranks since they don't mean jack in an aircraft.

Another point about pulling rank in an aircraft, even a lowly Lt can say "This is stupid, we shouldn't be doing this". We're a crew and pulling rank has led to crashes and fatalities in the past so it's very frowned upon.   If there's a disagreement, we land then jack each other up but never in the aircraft.

Cheers
