I have pushed this idea for sometime. Pressure is mounting to expand the Army to 560,000 or higher. To acheive those targets we need to be able to allow foreign volunteers to join the Army and Marines.
Max Boot article.

The concept worked well for me....I was Canadian, made no bones about wanting to remain Canadian, and served well. What changed?

Were you a green card holder when you joined? This seems to be proposing to open up the US armed forces to non green card holders. And we know how long it can take to get one of those things  ;)

Nope. I simply applied to join USMC, they sponsored my landed immigrant status and guaranteed to feed and house me for 1 year, more if they could find a use for me.  ;D

Interesting. I've never heard of anyone being able to join who didn't have at least a green card. Were you special?  ;D

Why do you ask that? I'm tired of people patting me on the head and telling everyone around them that I'm their special boy! Sheesh... ;D

no, just a "dope on a rope"

My father joined the USMC in 1965 as a Canadian. I guess there was some special clause during that period for Canadians who wanted to join and goto Southeast Asia.

That's exactly what I did.

Oh, ok. So you aren't talking about anything current. You are talking about Vietnam era policies. I'm pretty sure right now you need a green card to get in.

(Notice how I was nice and never used the word 'old' once  ;) )
