Personal Sidearms

Question open to those who have been over to Afghanistan.

Have any of you taken a personally owned sidearm (ie. pistol) over with you to use instead of the Browning? I would like to do this, and I'm looking for a precedent to base my next actions on.

Obviously whatever I took would have to be 9mm (or anyother very common caliber). I'm not looking to take a bloody inefficient hand-cannon overseas.

If you haven't, you don't need to respond. Enough people have told me what they think on the matter. I'm looking for the straight dope:

Have you done it? How? What did you take?

Any information would be tremendously helpful.

BTW, I'm not looking for opinions on the Army's Browning 9mm. I have fired it before, and I think it's a piece of garbage. I've fired many pistols, and find the Army's issue Browning to be inaccurate, unreliable, and generally poorly maintained. I can think of nothing that would dissuade me from this opinion. Thanks anyway.

If you're a serving soldier, you carry what your issued, and only that. You're a Pte in an Amb outfit. What's your TI? I doubt you're in a positon to state the effectiveness or reliability of the issue Browning. For your immediate info, most of the problems are caused by worn out mags and bent mag lips, not one of John Browning most effective and outstanding designs. However, you would know that if you had some experience with the pistol, right?
