Conservative MP Jay Hill suggested yesterday the Prime Minister consider "Trading Spaces" with a military family after complaining recently that his "drafty" official residence -- 24 Sussex Drive -- needed a make-over. The representative for Prince George-Peace River suggested Paul Martin try swapping 24 Sussex with a military family and trying on-base housing for the winter. "The Prime Minister says he's not looking forward to another bitter winter in his cold, drafty home at 24 Sussex Drive," said Mr. Hill in the House of Commons shortly after proposing the swap, based upon the hit home decorating TV series. "Welcome to the real world of our on-base military families." Mr. Hill went on to protest annual on-base rent increases, adding: "And I bet the Prime Minister's rent doesn't go up every year either ... Oh yes ... I forgot ... he doesn't pay any rent!"

Is is me or do more politicians seem to be standing up in public for the Forces these days? I hate politicians.......Could I possibly be wrong?
I'm shocked, confused even.........

What is left of Rockcliffe is just down the road from 24 Sussex.  It wouldn't be that much longer of a limo drive for the ole PM.  Then Uplands isn't that far out either.  I am sure there must be a three bedroom PMQ vacant and waiting for occupancy.

Three bedroom!!!!! I dunno.....couple, no dependants at home....don't think they would be entitled to a 3 bedroom!  >:D

Jay Hill has been saying this stuff for a while now.  He has done a good job on our behalf.  Now whether anything comes out
of his work is another thing....And the true test of any politician is what they do when they are in power.  Although I am happy to see that he is still making speeches like this.  He is no longer the Opposition's Defence critic, he moved on to the position of party whip after the last election.

Cheers

Man, I just wish the PM would come live at Fort Haldemand here at RMC. Thankfully I don't live there, but the place is so run down, etc. I don't think it's been renovated since opening in '49. January can't come soon enough for the people living there, as they will finally get to move out. Thoroughly disgusting.

My old residence at Victoria College (U of T) was quite "rustic", too ...

Perhaps it isn't the worst thing in the world if the "bottom of the corporate ladder" isn't so soft and cushy ... (i.e. preparing you for future hardships ...)?

Everybody is entitled to whine, and wine - in the latter case, there's a minimum age requirement ...

When you get to your tent in Afghanistan, you'll look back fondly to what you now call "disgusting".

I fondly Remember my Construction Trailer Barracks in Cannaught..... Given the choice between that, or Mod Tent I was Truly Living in the lap of luxury.. I mean hey.. I had A/C... and anyone who has been to ottawa knows it can get a little warm somedays.....  :)

AT one time staying in PMQ;s was a good bargain but ever since it was taken over by civis the prices kept going up and the service went down.  My biggest bitch is they say the rent is based on the local economy but what is not take into account is the fact that many people stay in PMQ;s because there is not work for their spouse in the local area so you end up supporting a faimily on one wage.  In the 7 years I was posted in Pet my wife could not find work so we stayed in PMQ's.  3 years ago we get posted to Gagetown my wife finds gets a good job a month later and we purchased a home. My monthly mortgage payments are lower than what many people are now paying for rent in their PMQ's.  What I tell a lot of young married guys I know is purchase a home as soon as you can and get out of the PMQ racket. There are all kinds of deals the banks will give you so ýou don't need a large downpayment and if you have RRSP's you can use some of that as a first time homebuyer.
