Nope. A first time impaired, even a hit and run, doesn’t generally net jail time. A second impaired is a mandatory of I think 30 days, usually served on weekends.

He did get fined and a driving ban.

A normal impaired is a much smaller fine and no probation, so they definitely tacked some on for the aggravating factors.
Not sure how they’ll gainfully employ a cop who can’t drive for a year and whose credibility in court is now shot, but I’m sure they’ll find somewhere to bury him.

But in fact a number of jurisdictions are now using Provincial sanctions instead. 90 day Prov Suspension, 1 year Interlock on vehicle and $1000 fine. No Criminal Record.
Many but not all Hit and Runs get an elevated fine ($2500) and may get some Probation (6 months). If no injuries. Some get less than this.
The OPS Member got a bit higher than Joe Citizen across the board.

Now firing the OPS Member should have been on the table. But the Hearing Officer is bound by the joint submission ( unless clearly unreasonable) . Which was probably based on the caselaw and taking into account a number of mitigating factors specific to this case. The sanction was in line with some RCMP ones in the last couple years.

He took a plea deal to straight impaired, but he was also charged with dangerous op, fail to remain, fail to stop, and fail to report- a couple of the last ones obviously provincial, but there may be a crim code fail to remain in there too. Probably they jacked the sentencing submissions up somewhat as part of the plea deal.

The cop likely could have beat the impaired charges if he wanted to and had a couple extra bucks to spend.

Most Members don’t opt for that voluntarily and in the RCMP and many other Services, it isn’t an option you can impose as a disciplinary measure. Normally an interim measures option during the investigation.

Most of the top tier impaired lawyers make their money on the Over 0.08 charges (and roadside screening devices). Which the OPS member wasn’t charged with.
Straight impaired is all about the witnesses. Maybe you rattle the 2 civilians, but I would be curious what role the passenger OPS Member played in the invest. He would know he was on the hook under the Police Act and also be cognizant of not getting an obstruction charge. I bet he took some discipline also.

I haven't heard much 'instead of' Highway Traffic Act sanctions in Ontario; although I have heard Impaired/Over .08 plead down to Careless Driving. Most of the Ontario HTA sanction are triggered by a CC conviction so are in addition to. Unless things have changed, he would also face a mandatory 1-year ignition interlock imposition, which includes the rental cost of the device, the cost to install and the cost to remove, which can add up to several hundred dollars, plus a 'reinstatement fee' after his suspension, which is around $300.
