Not a conditional sentence. All charges were dropped in favour of a peace bond.

This has been in the news a few times as it wound its way through the court in typical Canadian velocity. The whole chain of events was intimate partner/ex-intimate partner/relationship related. She doesn't strike me as being all that stable, but that's just me watching the news.

She is on leave and has been for a while. I wouldn't get my hopes up for any dramatic action by professional standards. I suspect she will stay on extended leave until she retires, or is buried in some GHQ job when she only sees her weapon once a year during training.

The Durham Regional Police Service announced Thursday that it has reassigned police officers who allegedly assaulted a Black lawyer while she was working at an Oshawa courthouse, in addition to notifying two civilian oversight agencies of the allegations.

The announcement came amid mounting pressure from Ontario’s legal community, whose lawyers and organizations have rallied behind the lawyer, Sudine Riley of Aitken Roberston, accusing the officers of racial bias. Several organizations have called for an independent investigation that DRPS itself won’t conduct.

According to a press release issued earlier this week by Riley’s lawyer, Riley was working in an interview room at an Oshawa courthouse on Jan. 23 when two DRPS officers entered the room, “challenged her presence,” slammed her head into a desk, dragged her out of the room, and ripped off her headscarf. DRPS then charged Riley with an offence under the Trespass to Property Act.

Toronto - not much solid info out, press conference tomorrow, but CBC is reporting 9 Toronto police officers charged, G&M has a total of at least 30 police, not all Toronto, arrested linked to ongoing tow truck violence and corruption. Through my grapevine I’ve heard of potentially a Peel officer and some Ontario Corrections guys arrested too. Allegations include trafficking drugs and leaking addresses of crime figures and other police officers, and a plot to kill a corrections unit commander.

The news seems to be updating fast as they work sources, probably we’ll hear other services named soon, along with more details.

Presser from York Regional Police at 10am eastern today, we should get more detail then. TorStar is reporting this morning that the ‘more than 30 arrested’ is total arrests, not specifically police, which makes sense. Different outlets are reporting 7 versus 9 officers charged, maybe it’s 7 TPS and two others or something. I’m super interested to learn more about this investigation. This kind of complex anti corruption investigation and prosecution had to have been super resource intensive while also needing to be highly covert.

Hopefully it was simply time to wrap up and make arrests, and the takedown day wasn’t hurried due to some imminent safety threat.
