Political impacts of Ukraine war

Maybe the US should deploy the 'Peace Corps' along the frontlines to help rebuild the country. Say no closer than 1km from the border/frontline/LoC to 25km back of the front. Have them deploy 10-20k American workers under the US Peace Corps supervision/control. Can't see Vladdy attacking if this was a case.

Sounds like a very Christian thing to do....offering the other cheek.

Personally Luke appeals to me more than Matthew.

Edit to correct wrong reference to Mark.

Emphasis on 'European led effort'... The Euros continue to be a little too gun shy, as per SOP:

US troops won’t be sent to help defend Ukraine, Trump says

President Donald Trump on Tuesday offered his assurances that U.S. troops would not be sent to help defend Ukraine against Russia after seeming to leave open the possibility the day before.

Trump also said in a morning TV interview that Ukraine’s hopes of joining NATO and regaining the Crimean Peninsula from Russia are “impossible.”

The Republican president, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and other European leaders held hours of talks at the White House on Monday aimed at bringing an end to Russia’s war against Ukraine. While answering questions from journalists, Trump did not rule out sending U.S. troops to participate in a European-led effort to defend Ukraine as part of security guarantees sought by Zelenskyy.

So, Trump expecting Euro troops to deploy to protect American rare earth mineral interests in Eastern Ukraine, check.

More correctly he has said US troops will not be the majority of the troops.
He has said he is willing to send US troops as part of a coalition, but we will not be the largest contingent.

This won't be Germany in the Cold War, so if the Peace Enforcement Force is say a Corps, you would likely see a Bde from the US, with the parent Div being in Poland, and Divisional resources given to supporting the Bde.

Which likely means nothing, as I don't see any huge push from the EU or Canada to come up with a Corps for Ukrainian "DMZ" deployment.

I haven't heard/read that quote yet, but here (39 seconds in) -- not directly from the POTUS' mouth (and always subject to something else from POTUS' mouth) -- but his spokesperson's pretty clear here:
The President has definitively stated U.S. troops will not be on the ground in Ukraine, but we can certainly help in the co-ordination and perhaps provide other means of security guarantees to our European allies.
Glimmer of hope: Al Jazeera quotes him saying:
... Trump said that European countries were willing to provide troops to bolster Ukraine’s security, but the US could provide support “by air”. “We’re willing to help them with things, especially, probably if you talk about by air, because there’s nobody that has the kind of stuff we have,” Trump told the Fox & Friends programme. “I don’t think it’s going to be a problem.” ...
Happy to see something leaving me even more optimistic, though ....

Fingers crossed you're right, bud!

Traitor Trump’s pact with Darth Putin is the most shameful sellout of a sovereign nation since 1938-39 Czechoslovakia. And probably even more so. If Ukraine should fall (which is what I think Trump really wants) then a wholesale slaughter of its intelligentsia will begin. Despite the dedication of Britain, Poland and other NATO members to the organization, cracks are already forming amongst the Italians, Greeks and others. Sadly, the lessons of history are being forgotten.

At the end of the day if America doesn't send troops, France as an independent Nuclear state would need to be if not front and center, right beside the guy at the center, for any serious deterrent, outside of putting a full Army sized combat force into Ukraine.

Maybe we could hire Wagner?

Happily surprised to see that Spain and Portugal are willing to pony up some troops.

Not surprised by Hungary and Slovakia, same with Italy and Austria.

Of the rest, I'd roll the dice and say Montenegro, North Macedonia and Bulgaria would be no shows. Belgians would be a flip of the coin, depends on which federal party is currently in power/coalition. They have a hard enough time deciding if the sun rises in the east and still sets in the west right now. Iceland will send cod. Luxembourg will offer free banking. I can't see Turkey sending any troops, but might provide equipment/drones.

Those willing to have a go would be UK, France, Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark, Canada (though I'm at a loss what we could send of significance), Czechia, the 3 Baltics, I think Romania will go, same with Albania and Greece. Slovenia would send a token force (that could rival Canada's).

Germany - I just don't see them sending troops in Ukraine - can anyone say, "6th battle of Kharkov", with Germans defending in this version.
