any body doing, or done basic want to share what a daily routine, (ie. dress, exercise, inspection) might consist of, might be a good routine to be in pre-basic to make the transition a weee bit easier,

Remember that this is just me talking and that i ahve done basic almost 12 years ago !!

I would have to say get used to getting up early and going to bed late.  Get into the habit of making your bed perfectly every morning and having your room perfectly clean EVERY day ( i say this because i am not sure about your perticular current situation...no offense).  That would be a good start IMHO.  Also, get physicaly ready. Push-ups, sit-ups and lots of running.

As far as daily routine goes, when i went trough it was up at 0530, inspection at 0700, classes start at 0800. Lunch was at 1200 then classes again at 1300 till 1600.  After supper sometimes we would have stuff like MOC breifings, classes, corrective training but lots of kit and quarters ( getting your uniforms and room ready for inspection plus common areas)  We were not allowed out for quite sometime. After a while we were allowed to got to the recruit mess in the evenings but had a curfew.  We also had student duties like "firewatch" but i'm not sure if this is still done.  It took a while before we were allowed off the base on weekends but sometimes we had weekend duties like duty private at the green desk. Unfortunately for us we were the 25th aniversary platoon so we got alot of flak when it came to drill ( you will be doing alot of that). Lots of classes, drill, PT, pool, and change parade !!! We pretty much had to wear "garisson/work dress" every day but now it is mostly combats that are the daily dress.  Expect the first few days to be very busy and somewhat overwhelming.

Most of the training you will be doing is done inside the "mega" but you will be going to other buildings for drill and NBCD ( nuclear, biological and chemical defense).  In my day it was bldg HD4 but this may have changed. Other than that, the rest is insidoors other than the odd PT periods.

Week 8 and 9 are done ( as far as i recall) in the field in Farnham.......the routine there will vary from platoon to platoon.

Any thing else, give me a shout

cheers

Thanx for the great info, I'm sure iI won't be the only one to benefit from it. I'll definetly try to get on that as soon as i can, fortunetly though I will probly do my courses on the weekends, but I figure Keeping the same routine all week can only make me stronger.

Thanx again

I didn't realize you meant reserves...i assumed reg force !!!  my bad

IMHO the only thing you can really prepare for is the waking-up early and ensuring you are fit. Everything else is probably totally different from anything anyone has experienced as a civvy, so there's no way to prepare for it...just take everything as it comes.

Good luck.

Wow.. thats allmost exactly how its done now.. at least 2 years ago :)

Reg force of course.

I'm in reserve BMQ right now on the weekends. We have to be there at 7:15 to begin for 7:30 on Saturday mornings. We generally do knowledge classes throughout the day until supper at 5:00 - 6:00. When we get back from supper, the rest of the evening is for course admin stuff and night routine and lights are supposed to be out by 23:00 but it's normally 23:45 or so. Fire picket at night is rotated in pairs, every hour. Sunday we get up at 6:30, inspection, get dressed, etc. and are back from breakfast by 8:00. Classes again all day until we get to go home around 16:00.

Not much else to say, the structuring is very simple. I do suggest that you learn as much as you can off the internet before going. ex: rank structure, and perhaps marching stuff. The Cadets websites have some information about basic marching drills. Oh, and it wouldn't hurt to get used to going to bed late, getting up early, and getting little to no sleep. I have been through two weekends now and haven't slept one minute.

Always make sure you have a pen and an extra just incase. Most importantly, make sure you don't lose any of your stuff! Have it all marked and make sure when you leave on Sunday that you have everything you brought! So many people in BMQ have been yelled at for leaving stuff behind. Guys have left their boxers in the change rooms, left gas masks behind after the weekend, and left their notebooks sitting under the desks. It really pisses them off when you leave something behind and they find it.

Oh BTW, if you wondered why I didn't mention anything about PT (fitness) we were told that they were not allowed to have us do any fitness, something to do with liability and changes in the reserves.

Well I hope I helped you out a little bit.

In basic you have weekends off?????
What kinda stuff do you spend your weekends doing (if your not allowed off base), other then the book \ cleaning stuff??
Can they still give you crap for haveing stuff out of order, still get you out of bed at 0400???  :salute:

I just graduated last friday from basic so I can answer some questions.

Yes, during basic training you get the weekends off. Your first weekend off will be your 4th weekend there, unless your platoon pisses off your instructors. But trust me, everyone gets there first weekend off, its kinda mandatory, otherwise the entire platoon will go nuts. During the weekends you are allowed off base, one of the guys went home to Edmonton for the weekend. They don't care where you go, just as you are back before 23:00 on Sunday night. I usually spend my weekends at the Club Bistro thats on base, its just a place where everyone can relax, play some pool, Xbox, watch some Dvd's and drink some really cheap beer.  >:D Wake-up times during the weekends are 0900 for Saturday and 1200 for Sunday, but you can sleep all day if you want, you just have to wake-up and make your bed. Don't stress about Basic in St.Jean, its not as tough as they say it is and the 10 or so weeks will fly by.

Wait wait wait say that again? They can't have you doing PT anymore?
Could you elaborate abit more on that please?

I remember hearing rumours of such as well when I was on the reg course... Sgts (R) making comments as to how much more they enjoyed RegF courses.....

(out of my ---- speculation) IF it is true.. .maybe has to do with too manypeople not being able to work that civvy job on monday because of Sunday's "correction"....  plus the fact that 2 days a week alternating is hardly any way to build up PT....

So far we have had 2 weekends and no PT. They just told us that they were not allowed to have us do any PT, something to do with liability if we get hurt. No running, no push-ups, no situps, only fitness allowed is marching. I don't know if that is just here reserve BMQ in the regiment or what, but thats what we were told.

Sorry thats all I know.

That's just.....well I'm not going to criticize anyone but I've NEVER seen that.  The last weekend BMQ I taught on we started with a 2km run on the first day and finished with a 9km on the last weekend.  Plus ruck marches in between.  Now granted that much running isn't normal, the Ssgt. maj. on that course was a PT fanatic, but every BMQ course I've ever taught on has involved PT.

You know I have tried that but then after every time I clean my room my dog comes in and leaves like a pound of fur on the carpet.
