OTTAWA (CP) - The Canadian government announced on Friday that it's looking for a company to train pilots to fly its new Hercules aircraft and Chinook helicopters.
The exact value of the contract is unclear, but the Ministry of Public Works says it's looking to sign a 20-year deal.
Public Works Minister Michael Fortier wants to find an established company that is ready to reinvest at least 75 per cent of the contract value into Canadian businesses [emphasis added].
"Our goal is to secure the right kind of services for our military personnel and ensure that Canadian companies reap significant benefits from these contracts," Fortier said in a news release.
Fortier added that the contract should create jobs in the aerospace and defence industries.
In addition to training the pilots, the contract calls for maintaining and upgrading flight simulators.
Canada has already announced its intention of buying 17 Hercules C-130 military transport planes.
Ottawa is also spending $2 billion on 16 Chinook CH-47 helicopters, which can transport more than 8,000 kilograms of supplies.
Officials from pilot and military training firm CAE Inc. (TSX:CAE) told The Canadian Press on Friday they are interested in making a bid for the contract.
