Hey,
I have been in the reserves for almost one year in a armouded recce unit and I am interested in doing a tour to Afganistan most likely. I was wondering what level of qualifications/rank is usually required to be accepted to go on tour?
Thanks :warstory:

Welcome Ralph....please don't burn us all  ;)

You may want to ask someone in your Regiment for clarification.

As far as I know you must be:
- QL 4 qualified (I'm not sure of what that is with the new system, DP3 perhapse?)
- be deployable (medically and phisically fit)
- actually be qualified vehicles that are going to be used in theater (Coyote or Bison for Armd pers)
- your unit must recieve something in writting that they are to supply troops for a deployment.

As for getting on a deployment to Afghanistan....

There are plenty of Reg force Armd guys waiting.....so be patient  ;)

Regards

Thanks for the insight Franko, good to know, usually you get alot of attitude from Reg Force concerning res forces...

Thanks very much for the info....i guess ill talk to some guys in my unit.......:flame:

There's lots of guys in your unit that have been on tour, I'm a former Hussar myself and there's a few of my old coursemates and friends there that have been on a few tours, PM inbound with some names.

I was in the millitia years 11 ago......I know what you mean.

The problem for the most part is a few glue bags get on B class or on tour and put across a bad reflection on the reserves.

The best thing to do is work hard and you'll get rid of that poor impression that some troops in the regs have concerning reservists. We currently have one here in the Regiment and has gained respect from everyone who has worked with him.

Regards

Good post Franko! Unfortunately for every good troop you see in the reserves you see far more pieces of crap! As Franko said if you are a switched-on troop who works hard, listens, and asks questions if you don't understand then most Regs will accept you. If not, well we all know what happens then! >:D

That is also true. That whole situation makes it that much harder for the guys to get accepted by the troops. Even when they do go Reg, it's usually ex-reservists that have the hate on for their former comrades. I've seen it all too often. It then becomes a vicious cycle. I know of one fellow who has lots of reserve time....and he'll never admit to it and wants me to keep it quiet. He is a switched on soldier and he doesn't want any of his past res time to tarnish what is a steadily progressing career.

I can't figure him out for the life of me.  ::)

Yep....given every dirty job until contract runs out. Sad but true....for the most part.  :-\

As before Ralph....work hard, listen, and learn and you'll get there sooner or later.

Regards
