When you enlist in the Canadian Armed Forces, are you guaranteed to go into the trade you chose? for example, I want to join, but am not interested in a combat role.  That isn't to say I won't fight if need be, but would rather a high-tech trade.

For example, if I want this trade: http://www.forces.ca/html/communicatorresearchoperator_reg_en.aspx

Is that guaranteed, or could I end up in the infantry or some other position which I have no interest in.

Whoa,

Yarbo.  First off, I want to say thank you.  After all of these years, and the thousands upon thousands of threads we have, not once has your question ever been asked!

Again, on behalf of all of the members here, in particular the DS staff who have to wade through many useless posts, I appreciate the fact that you went through the recruiting forum ( http://Forums.Army.ca/forums/threads/17703.0.html) and found one question that has not been dealt with here.

Kudos, Yarbo.

Hi Yarbo,

Welcome to the site.

You will find the chat and such to be a pleasure here.  I apologize for locking the thread, as you have a right to an answer to your question.

Good luck in your quest.

When you join you will be offered a trade, it's up to you to accept it. You will only be enrolled in the trade you were offered and accepted, there are only a few occasions when the CF can force you into a different trade (compulsory occupational transfer) and when they do you again get a choice.

If you want Comms Rsch and you are offered it, then that's what you'll be (and from what I hear its a fantastic trade, good luck...there are a couple of those guys on the boards here you can PM with questions etc).

Don't think because you picked Comm Rsch that you'll end up in a desk job forever. There is a field requirement, and any element of 291 does a Soldier Qualification (Army-style basic training after your BMQ at St. Jean).
