Good afternoon,

Does a person have to actually live within a certain distance from the base if in the reserves or can the person live a couple hours away as long as they make training?

It depends of your unit. I'm currently living in the States, 2hours30 from the base and they accepted me.

There are no geographical boundaries like in the regular force but common sense will likely be applied.

Thanks for the help

Another question.

For basic training in the reserves, Is it broken up over time or all at once like the regular forces?

It is run both part time over weekends during the year, and full time during the summer. Although the full time reserve BMQ and the Reg force one are not the same.

Although if you go officer route, there is nothing beyond the basic training that is available part time (as per my recruiter)

Your unit will dictate your allowance based on your geographical area. Most will not turn you down if you are a regular worker, but they will most likely deny your commuters assistance if there is a unit closer to you.

Also as of now bmq is offered on weekends, throughout the summer, and as a high school co-op.

There is little difference in the regular force BMQ and the PRES BMQ. The best way to look at REG/PRES courses is that they generally encompass the same material (budget and ammunition allotment varies) but the intensity and time is very different.

A PRES BMQ may cover 20 things within a month, whereas the REG BMQ will cover those 20 things over many many months, thus you learn the same things but the regular force course offers it in much more detail and at a high standard
